DAY
Once, there was a forest here…
And this forest produced music -
the sounds of the birds, wind,
streams, leaves, animals and
insects along with the First
Nations mi’kmaq created
harmony and rhythms which
sustained life.

SO - grab a piece of the forest

and make your own music.

Find a friend and make a

harmony - sing to the sky,
make a rhythm,
and create a new music
for the forgotten forest

YOU JUST PARKED IN A POSSIBLE GARDEN !

The B. Tech in Landscape Architecture program at Dalhousie
University asks you to contemplate your environment:

How do we value urban green space?

How else can we design our downtown to rethink underused
parking lots?
Can parking spaces be better used to address other issues
such as greening for mental relaxation or to clean the air & water?

Students and faculty at the university, in partnership with the Atlantic

Provinces Association of Landscape Architects have installed temporary
installations to help you think differently about our environment.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual global event where
citizens, artists and activists collaborate to
temporarily transform metered parking spaces into
temporary public spaces. Running since 2005,
PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement,
with organizations and individuals creating new
forms of temporary public space in urban contexts
around the world.

The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to

the need for more urban open space, to generate
critical debate around how public space is created
and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban
human habitat.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
September 2020

This year, Dalhousie University’s Landscape Architecture Program will once again participate in
PARK(ing)day, an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and designers collaborate to
temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces – temporary public spaces. The
project aims to encourage critical thought and spark imagination about how public spaces can be used.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
We invite you to transform an everyday parking stall into an experimental design and showcase the ways
you think urban public space could be used. Because it is virtual this year, your ideas can be more avant-
garde and progressive in design ideas as no physical construction will occur. The only limitation is the size
of a street side parking space: 6m x 2.4m or 6m x 2.4m. Please create your ideas on an 11x17 or A3 sheet for
display in the LA Virtual Design Gallery and submit by September 17 for wider distribution and publication.
