The status of military university in China

2.Whether should we establish military university?

In China
Total population-- more than 1,400,000,000
Total universities-- nearly 3,000
Active armed forces-- 2,000,000
Military universities--44 (in 2020)
From 2016, China is reforming its national defense
and armed forces.
Rebalancing and recognizing military educational and
research institution. The PLA and PAP have
restructured the previous 77 universities and colleges
into 44.
China’s armed forces have established the Central
Military Commission(CMC) Steering Committee on
Military Scientific Research and recognized the
Academy of Military Sciences(AMS) and the research
institutes of the service.
Thus, the military scientific research forces have been
rebalanced with the AMS as the lead, the research
institutes of the services and arms as the main forces,
and the research components in educational
institutions and the troops as supplements.

(Defense White Paper, China’s National Defense in the New Era, 2019)
If you want to become a military officer, you must
enter a military university/college.
New military officers– more than 14,000(in 2016)
If you want to become a colonel, you must enter Army
Command College.

President Xi Jinping: To achieve the goal of build a
world-class army, the construction of our military’s
academies must be greatly strengthened.
On the one hand
There are prominent destabilizing factors and
uncertainties in international security. The world is
not yet a tranquil place.
As the progress of military technology is very fast, the
military officers and soldiers must obtain more and
more abilities.
The military career is very special and some majors are
classified or secret, the civil universities are incapable.
The military professional education is important.
PLA Adjusts Policies on Graduate Student Enrolment
The goals of the enrolment plan in 2017 are to reduce the
enrolment of students majoring in science, engineering
and medicine, and to increase the recruitment of those
majoring in military-related fields, especially the fields that
are closely related to construction of new-type combat
forces, including strategic early-warning, military
aerospace, air defense and anti-missile, information-based
operation, and strategic projection.
On the other hand
The defense expenditure is limited.

A lot of majors can be studied in civil universities.

We don’t need too much military universities.

RMB1,043.237 billion ≈ EURO 133.748 billion(2017)
Personnel Expense 30.8%
Training and Sustainment Expense 28.1%
Equipment Expense 41.1%
Conclusion

Consider of national security strategy, GDP, and

military traditions, military universities are essential.
However, only military high tech, command, and other
special professional major are crucial.
