I recently got home
from a visit. Now Glasgow,
Montana will always remain
in my heart (I lived there
for 10 years) but this time I
thought maybe I could let her
go. Just a bit. You know, maybe
not spend every vacation in
the Bonnie City.
Maybe stop the bi-annual
trek and go just once a year?
Or every other year? There
are other places to visit in
Montana, I think. But once I
got there, nope. There is only
Glasgow. And I am hooked!
My dad and I decided to
go fishing and stay in Glasgow.
Fish a bit and visit friends. I
usually get back twice a year,
spring and fall when the lake
prevents me from getting
home here in Minnesota. I’d
been back in the early fall
last year, but my spring travel
was a little late. Life gets in
the way, you know. And we
discussed going somewhere
else. Truly we did.
But in the end, it was
Glasgow.

And so we drug the boat and all the fishing
necessities all the way to Glasgow. We have never done
this before.
This became evident when we got an “almost
ticket” from the game warden for not having an
invasive species license for our out-of-state boat. Who
knew? I do now, incidently, and I have one. It takes a
lot of stuff to trailer a boat that far. Good thing my dad
thought of everything.
We fished the big lake and Nelson Reservoir. And
we caught some nice walleyes. We’ll have a nice family
fish fry here one of these days. The weather was great
with not too much wind and on the day it was windy,
we took the dogs down to Bone Trail.
But, here’s the thing. And it’s the “thing” I won’t
get if I go somewhere else. Glasgow, Montana, while it
might be the “Middle of Nowhere” to some people, has
everything to me!
We stayed at the Star Motel. I’ve been staying at
the Star motel since my first trip to town over 10 years
ago. I’ve been through at least three owners, since the
time of Shirley Fewer.
And we ate at the local restaurants. We had
lunches and dinners at Flips, of course, since it’s right
across the street. The Oasis is always a favorite and we
certainly enjoyed our breakfasts at the new Toodies.
We will be back. We miss Nickel Bills, Nickel Wades
and then DB’s and we’d love to see it come back but we
wish all of the old owners good luck in whatever new
venture they have going.
We got to see Hank Williams at the Fort Peck
theater. It may have been an imposter but he sure did a
great job!
But the best reason of all, of course, is the people
and old friends. You know, the ones that want to work
around your fishing schedule just to see you. They’ll
meet you at the V, or buy you lunch or dinner, or
make you dinner if you can make it. They’ll bend over
backwards just to see you because they understand
that my time there is short before I have to go back to
my real world. We hug and laugh when I get there and
do the same thing when I leave.
Now, where else you get that! And how do all of
the best people in the world get to Glasgow?
So Glasgow it is for me for the bi-annual trek. See
you all in the fall! Because the middle of nowhere is
everywhere to me.

Hartwell to play in Williston

It’s every athlete’s dream to play sports in college.
Stevie Hartwell will have that chance to continue her
softball career at Williston State College.
Hartwell just wrapped up her high school career
with the Glasgow Scotties where she was the catcher for
the last four years. She will change from red and white
to green and white. Now she will be a Lady Teton.
“When I took a tour (of the college), the girls
that were there were really nice and they have a great
program,” said Hartwell. “The coach is super nice. It’s
where I want to be.”
The Tetons finished the season 12-30 and were
8-16 in conference play in a rebuilding year for coach
Jared Ward.
Hartwell has been playing softball where she
started in Havre before moving to Glasgow.
“I grew up watching my dad play fast pitch softball,”
said Hartwell. “I learned everything from my dad. When
I was four I started playing tee-ball.”
But during her high school career she was afraid of
hitting the ball, especially her sophomore year.
“I would rather get walked. I was the lead-off
batter,” she said. “My junior and senior years I worked
on my batting. I practiced on my swing.”

Miss Netherlands ‘Champing at the Bit’ to Compete in Next Beauty Pageant

In a night of stunning
and inclusive bliss, The
Netherlands conferred its
highest beauty pageant honor
upon a trans woman who
looked just like a real woman.
The totally real woman is
reportedly “champing at the
bit” to compete again.
“I’m so thrilled to
win this incredible award,”
Rikkie Valerie Kollé, totally
a woman, told reporters.
“I can’t wait to win more
pageants! I’m just rearing to
go, champing at the bit, trying to bridle my excitement,
saddling up, ready to hit the trail!”
Kollé wowed the judges during the talent portion
of the event by elegantly cantering while eating 50 apples
off a handler’s open palm in under 5 minutes.
“Rikkie is one determined...woman. Yes-human
woman,” handler Liv De Vris explained. “You just have
to be really careful to keep your palm flat and fingers
together when doing the apple-feeding. If not…well,
you might get bit!”
After crowning Kollé with The Netherlands’ top
pretty-lady award, judges lured the winner off the stage
with a bucket of oats. They then lead Kollé to a trough
of water, but couldn’t get the absolutely 100 percent
human woman to drink.
“I’m really trying not to look a gift horse in the
mouth, but I’m so excited to represent all other real
women in The Netherlands because I, too, am a real
woman,” Kollé remarked before letting out a celebratory
