In Malaysia, activated sludge system, such as extended aeration, is commonly employed to treat domestic wastewater..
However, recent research by Chen et al. (2021) found that extended aeration could not completely remove antibiotics
from the wastewater. It was estimated that 115.72 g, 202.25 g, 170.55 g and 213.21 g of ampicillin, ciprofloxacin,
erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole, respectively, were escaped from the treatment systems. Read the following
article:-

Chen C.X., Aris A., Yong E.L., Noor Z.Z. (2021). Evaluation of the occurrence of antibiotics at different treatment stages
of decentralised and conventional sewage treatment plants, International Journal of Environmental Science and
Technology, 19, 5547–5562.

Then, summarize the article. It should comprise the details related to mass balance analysis and the removal route
of the antibiotics in extended aeration treatment system. Thereafter, suggest tertiary treatment
technology/technologies to upgrade the treatment system. Provide the fundamental principles and justifications of
the chosen technology/technologies in removing the antibiotics. You can explore the technology/technologies through
literature, internet and other means.
