BS 88 : Section 2.2 : 1988

Foreword
Tlc,jSection of BS 88 has been prepared under the direction of the Power Electrical Engineering Standards Committee.
Together with Section 2.1 it supersedes BS 88 : Part 2 : 1985, which is withdrawn.
For ease of reproduction the English text of 1EC 269-2-1 section II has been used.
IEC 269-2-1 is divided into three sections, each dealing with a specific example of standardized fuse for use by
authorized persons:
Section 1 ‘Fuses with fuse-links with blade contacts’;
Section II ‘Fuses with fuse-links for bolted connections’ ;
Section 111 ‘Fuses with fuse-links having cylindrical contact caps’.
This Section of BS 88 is identical with section II of IEC 269-2-1: 1987 i n c l u d i n g h a h e n t 1 published in 1 W a n d Amendment- 2

Dublisheà in 1 M InternationaíElectrotechr3~l Commissbn (IEC). i t should be read in conjunctionwith BS 88 : Part 1 and
BS 88 : Section, 2.1 as the clauses and tables have been numbered so as t o correspond with publications.
Terminology and conventions
Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is drawn
especially to the following.
The comma has been used as a decimal marker. In British Standards it is current practice to use a full point o n the
baseline as the decimal marker.

1 ‘Fuses within the scope of this standard are not sensitive to normal electromagnetic disturbances, and therefore no
immunity tests are required.
Significant electroniagnetic disturbance generated by a fuse is limited to the instant of its operation. Provided that the
maximum arc voltages during operating in the type test comply with the requirements of the clause in this standard
specifying niaxímuni arc voltage, the requirements for electromagnetic compatibility are deemed to be satisfied.’

NOTE. Texrual error. When adopting the text of the international standard the following error was discovered.
In table III, the title should read ‘Gates for specified pre-arcing times of “gG” fuse-links’. It has been marked in the text and has been
reported to IEC in a proposal to amend the text of the international standard.

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legd obligations.

8.5. I Arrangement of thefuse
The test arrangement of the fuse-link is given in Figure 6.
8.5.8 Acceptability of test results
The requirements of IEC Publication 269-1 apply and in addition fuse-links shall operate
without the melting of the fine fuse wire and without mechanical damage to the rig.

8.6 Verification of non-deterioration of contacts

8.10 of IEC 269-1 applies.

8.6.1 Arrangement of the fuse

8.10.1 of IEC 269-1 applies with the following addition.

The dummy fuse-links shall have dimensions that comply with figure 1 (Il) of IEC 269-2-1
for those references that are accommodated in the standardized fuse-holders in figure 2
(il) of IEC 269-2-1.

The power dissipation of the dummy fuse-links shall be the maximum rated power
acceptance of the fuseholders given in figure 2 (il) of IEC 269-2-1 when tested in the
standardized power dissipation test rig given in figure 5(11) of IEC 269-2-1.

The dummy fuse-links shall be so constructed that they do not operate during passage of
the overload current lnr.

8.6.2 Test method

The following wording is added after the first paragraph of 8.10.2 in IEC 269-1.

The following test values have to be applied:

Test current: conventional non-fusing current Inr

Load period: 25 % of the conventional time
No-load period: 10 % of the conventional time

A test voltage lower than the rated voltage may be used.

8.6.3 Acceptability of the results

After 250 cycles, the measured temperature-rise values shall not exceed the temperature
rise measured at the beginning of the tests by more than 15 K.

After 750 cycles, if necessary, the temperature shall not exceed the values measured
before the beginning of the tests by more than 20 K.

Noies:
( I ) In ali references, dimension a includes any projections
such as rivet heads, but the design of the tags between
dimensions P and rn is limited by a line drawn at 45" to
the contact surface.

(2) All fixing holes are elongated as indicated by j to allow

for manufacturing tolerances on dimension a.

(3) Dimensions e and f a r e nominal material sizes and

subject to manufacturing tolerances as specified in the
relevant standards for the raw materials.

(4) For A I to A4 reference fuse-links, the fixing slots may

be extended either axially or laterally to form open-
ended slots.

AMD 6697 Foreword

April 1991
Insert the following two paragraphs at the end of the existing text.
‘Fuses within the scope of this standard are not sensitive to normal electromagnetic disturbances, and therefore no
immunity tests are required.
Significant electromagnetic disturbance generated by a fuse is limited t o the instant of its operation. Provided that the
maximum arc voltages during operating in the type test comply with the requirements of the clause in this standard
specifying maximum arc voltage, the requirements for electromagnetic compatibility are deemed t o be satisfied.’

8.6 Verification of non-áeterioration of contacts

8.10 of IEC 269-1 applies.

8.6.1 Arrangement of the fuse

8.10.1 of IEC 269-1 applies with the following additi-n.

The dummy fuse-links shall be so constructed that they do not operate during passage of
the overload current inf.

8.6.2 Test method

The following wording is added after the first paragraph of 8.10.2 in IEC 269-1.

The following test values have to be applied:

Test current: conventional non-fusing current Inr

Load period: 25 % of the conventional time
No-load period: 1O % of the conventional time

A test voltage lower than the rated voltage may be used.

8.6.3 Acceptability of the results

After 250 cycles, the measured temperature-rise values shall not exceed the temperature
rise measured at the beginning of the tests by more than 15 K.

After 750 cycles, if necessary, the temperature shall not exceed the values measured
before the beginning of the tests by more than 20 K.
