EE007-3-1-ESDM / VE2 Chapter 6 – Kinetics of particles

Tutorial 11

1. A box of 50kg is pulled by a force P from rest as shown. Given that the force P is

where t is time in seconds, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the box
and the surface is 0.3. The effect of the force such that the box slides to the right
with an acceleration. With the aid of free body diagrams, determine;
i) the acceleration in terms of t.
ii) the velocity when the time is t = 4s.

2. The crate, which has a mass of 100kg, is subjected to the action of the two forces as
illustrated. The crate is originally at rest. Determine with the aid of a free body
diagram the distance it slides in order to attain a speed of 6ms -1, given that the
coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate and the surface is 0.2.

3. Two boxes are attached together through an inextensible string across two smooth
pulleys as shown. Determine the tension in the cable and the acceleration of the
boxes. Draw free body diagrams to aid your calculations.
