Chapter 1: Introduction to Control HMI Control HMI User’s Guide

Chapter 1: Introduction to Control HMI

This chapter introduces EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS Control HMI and discusses the
applications and configurators accessible from Control HMI, as well as multiple
monitor support and printer setup.
Control HMI is a managed InTouch Application that is maintained and deployed from
the ArchestrA engineering environment. There is no loss of functionality when moving
from a Standalone to Managed application. However, there are differences in how the
application is maintained and managed along with some default application content.
This section outlines the differences between a managed and a standalone Control
HMI application.
The key workflow and functional differences are:
• To edit the managed application, the $ControlHMI template can only be opened
and edited from the ArchestrA IDE.
• For operator runtime, instances of the $ControlHMI application are created and
deployed to ViewApp Engines on each station.
• Changes to the $ControlHMI Template can be tested before deploying changes
to operator workstations. Press the WindowMaker Runtime button to test the
changes locally in the runtime environment. This does not require deployment.
• Once changes to the $ControlHMI application are tested and checked in,
operator workstations are updated by redeploying the Control HMI instances on
each workstation.
• The Managed Control HMI Application supports the use of ArchestrA Graphics
and Situational Awareness (SA) Libraries.
• InTouch WindowMaker need not convert the application resolution when opened
in different resolutions. If the application is opened in a different resolution, select
‘No’ when asked whether to convert the application.
• To reduce application size, the managed application contains three sets of Detail
Displays. The five sets of Detail Displays that are not a part of the default set are
available in the workstation and can be imported back into the HMI application.
• The managed application and Framer support the Device Condition Message
panel and configurations for viewing Asset Management messages from devices.
Control HMI provides you an interface to the process.
From Control HMI, you can interact with any or all of the real-time plant, field, and
process data available in the Control Core Services, as well as ArchestrA Data
Access Servers and data from Application Objects running in Control HMI.
Control HMI provides:
• Direct access to dynamic process windows
• Access to Wonderware Historian historical data
• Service and display of process and system alarms, using the Alarm Panels
• Service and display of Device Condition Message Panels (managed application
only)
• Block Select, which provides an overview of the Control Core Services
compounds and blocks in the control database, and access to detail displays
• Access to the Trend window that presents and allows you to manage data to view
various trending selections.
• Access to other applications (if permitted), such as:
◦ EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS System Manager for interacting with the Control
Core Services hardware - described in System Manager User’s Guide
(B0750AP)

B0750AQ, Rev W 13
Control HMI User’s Guide Chapter 1: Introduction to Control HMI

◦ InTouch WindowMaker™ for building and configuring dynamic user graphics,

Control Core Services Hardware

Your Control Core Services system can include these hardware items:
• Foxboro Fieldbus modules, fieldbus processors, and power modules
• Legacy modular industrial workstations
• Personal workstations (PWs, not laptops)
• Application workstations
• Multi-monitor workstations
• Pointing devices, including mice, trackballs, or touchscreens
• Printers
• Annunciator keyboards
• Data storage devices
Workstations can support:
• Four annunciator keyboards
• Four annunciator keyboard horns
• Two console horns

Multi-monitor Workstations
A Control Core Services workstation can support multiple monitors. The Control HMI
supports one, two, or four monitor setups. See the “Configuring Multi-Monitor Layouts”
section in Framer and Alarm Management User Guide (B0750AR).
When configured for multi-monitor operation, standard (non-touchscreen) monitors
share a single keyboard and pointing device, and the cursor moves from one screen
to the other screen.

14 B0750AQ, Rev W
Chapter 1: Introduction to Control HMI Control HMI User’s Guide

Monitor Resolutions
Control HMI supports two monitor resolution settings - 1280x1024 or 1920x1080.
Widescreen 1920x1080 monitors have more screen real estate when compared with
1280x1024 monitors. If using the 1920 monitor, additional configuration in Framer is
needed to define the content to be displayed in the additional space.
Control HMI supports two different resolutions. This is accomplished through the
definition of Station Styles. All workstations and remote terminals have to be assigned
to a style. By default, all stations belong to the default style of the installed application.
No additional configuration is needed. Stations that are not using the default style are
the only stations that need to be configured.
See Framer and Alarm Management User’s Guide (B0750AR) for details on
configuring Styles and StyleGroups.
Control HMI application has a default station style of “Widescreen”.
Key Station Style Features:
• Place 4:3 formatted windows on each monitor
• Customize Menu Extensions and Function Bars for each monitor
• Define Detail Display locations
• Add custom features to Station Styles
Control HMI also supports migrated windows from Legacy 4:3 applications as well as
the ability to display widescreen formatted windows. All windows need to be assigned
to a window style. By default, all windows belong to the default style of the application.
Windows that are not using the default style are the only windows that need to be
configured. See Framer and Alarm Management User’s Guide (B0750AR) for details
on configuring WinStyles and Window Assignments.
Key Window Style Features:
• Automatic placement of 4:3 formatted windows on each monitor
• Automatic user notification when viewing 16:9 windows on 4:3 stations
• Add custom features to Window Styles

Startup Control HMI

Control HMI runs only on Control Core Services workstations with Control Core
Services v9.1 or later installed. Control HMI is configured to start automatically when
the Control Core Services workstation reboots. In addition, Control HMI can be
restarted by clicking the Restart Application command on the File menu.
When Control HMI starts, both the WindowViewer™ application and the Foxboro DCS
Alarm Server are started. The WindowViewer application displays the visible graphic
interface, and the Alarm Server application monitors alarm conditions and lights the
Process and System buttons. Both applications need to be running for full Control
HMI functionality. If the system is secured with OS User or OS Group authentication,
Control HMI automatically logs in users using their OS Login credentials.
If Control HMI needs to be started manually:
• For Windows 7/Server 2008, open it from the Start menu by clicking Foxboro
DCS > Control Software > Control HMI > View and Alarm Server.
• For Windows 10/Server 2016, open it from the Start menu by clicking Foxboro
DCS Control Software > Control HMI > View and Alarm Server.

B0750AQ, Rev W 15
Control HMI User’s Guide Chapter 1: Introduction to Control HMI

Configurators
The configurators are:
• WindowMaker™
• Framer

WindowMaker
WindowMaker software is the window builder/configurator used to create and
maintain graphic windows for viewing process dynamics.
Use WindowMaker drawing tools to:
• Create process windows representing the plant, a process area, or a portion of
the process
• Connect graphical objects to process variables and operator picks, providing
dynamic updates as a method of interacting with the process
For more information, see the WindowMaker help or the InTouch documentation.

Framer
Framer is used to:
• Configure the hierarchical structure of process graphic windows. This tree defines
the up/down/right/left relationships among InTouch windows. This hierarchy can
be up to three levels deep.
• Assign windows and alarm tags to hardware annunciator keys and to the
navigation hierarchy.
• Configure common alarm queries and other InTouch properties.
• Configure Control HMI runtime properties such as text message, monitor layouts
and quality displays.
• Configure user role permissions for access to Control HMI runtime features.
• Define station and window styles.
• Assign stations to station styles.
• Assign windows to window styles.

Printer Setup
The default graphics printer is the default workstation printer.

Read-Only Mode
Control Software contains a Read-Only View Engine. Instances of Control HMI that
are deployed to this View Engine will run in Read-Only mode. When in Read-Only
mode:
• There is no access to the Tools menus and applications such as BlockSelect and
PLB Monitor.
• Users cannot acknowledge alarm or silence and mute horns.
• Alarm Panel actions for managing alarm states are disabled.
• Writing to all external connections are disabled.
• All permissions related to Alarm Management, writing data, or accessing tools are
overwritten and set to false.

16 B0750AQ, Rev W
Chapter 1: Introduction to Control HMI Control HMI User’s Guide

• Custom alarm queries, filters, and scratchpad setups are disabled.

To create and setup a Read-Only Control HMI, see the Read-Only sections in
“Managed Control HMI Application” in Control Software Deployment Guide
(B0750BA).

Control HMI and FoxView Running on the Same Workstation

You can configure Control HMI and FoxView on the same workstation. However, a
workstation can run only one alarm subsystem. Decide which alarm management
subsystem to use and configure the system by using the Common Configurator. For
more information, see EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS Control Software Installation Guide
(B0750RA).
These Control HMI features are affected when the FoxView alarm system is
configured to run:
• Alarm panels will no longer show alarms receive by the local workstation. The
Alarm Panel queries can be configured in Framer to view alarms received by
other stations. Please note that the Process and System button alarm states are
connected to the local station and may not be in sync with alarms shown in the
alarm panel.
• Control HMI Framer cannot be used to configure Horns and Annunciator panels.
You need to use FoxView tools and utilities to configure Horns and Annunciators.
Annunciator panels and horns will be managed at runtime through FoxView and
the Alarm Manager displays.
• Control HMI Framer cannot be used to configure InTouch windows associated
with alarms. This feature is used in Annunciator panel configuration and when
selecting an alarm in the Alarm Panels to open the associated user display.
• Remote Desktop Server Clients (or Thin Clients) have to use the same
configured alarm subsystem as the Server station.
• Control HMI System and Process Alarm indicators will continue to show current
alarm states.
• ITCMD and DMCMD OM (Object Manager) variables are used to send supported
commands between FoxView and Control HMI. For instance, a button in FoxView
can be configured to open Control HMI windows in the WindowViewer. The
following command will open “MyWindow” and then opens an AIN Detail Display
faceplate for “MY.AIN” in the Control HMI InTouch application:
ITCMD = “showwin MyWindow; stddisp MY.AIN AIN”

the Wonderware Historian. Only points being historized can be added to these trends.
Up to four ScratchPad trends can be shown at the same time. There are four window
sizes to select from which can be shown in several different locations:
• Small - 1/6 the screen in the:
◦ Upper left or right of the program window
◦ Middle left or right of the program window
◦ Lower left or right of the program window
• Medium - 1/3 screen in the top, middle or bottom of the window
• Large - 2/3 screen in the top or bottom of the window
• Full window
You can create named sets of points to be displayed within the trend. For more
information on Wonderware Historian trending functionality, see the Wonderware
Historian Client Help accessible through the Start menu.

Using Scratchpad and Historian Client Trends for the First Time
After you install Control HMI, and open any window with a Wonderware Historian
Client Control for the first time, a system message appears. For example, if you open
a ScratchPad Trend or Historian Client Application for the first time, a message may
appear informing you that you do not have permission to load the required support
entities.

The application properly configures the support entities only if you log in with SQL
administrator privileges. Once configured, SQL administrator privileges are not
required.
When a Wonderware Historian Client application or control connects to a Wonderware
Historian Server, it validates the presence of required client control support in the
Runtime database (for example, stored procedures and tables). If the supporting
entities are not found, the user must log into the Historian Server with an account that
has SQL administrator privileges. This can be done from the Scratchpad Trend control
or the Historian Client Trend application.
1. Right-click the Trend Control and from the context menu, select Tools >
Servers.
The Server List Configuration dialog appears.

B0750AQ, Rev W 35

2. Select or Add the Historian Server Name.

3. Switch the Login mode from Windows Integrated to SQL Login.
4. Enter the SQL Administrator credentials.
5. Click Update to update the Server configuration.
6. Press the LogOn button to connect the server and install the required
components.
7. Verify that the trend connects to the server and tags can be seen.
Once the initial setup is complete, SQL administrator privileges are no longer
required.

Removing the SQL Administrator Login

1. Re-open the Server List Configurator.

2. Select the server in the server list and click LogOff
3. Change the Login back to Windows Integrated
4. Click Update to save the changes.

36 B0750AQ, Rev W
Chapter 3: Using Control HMI Control HMI User’s Guide

5. Select the server in the server list and click LogOn

NOTE: It may take 1-2 minutes to complete this initialization process when a
Wonderware Historian Client control window is opened for the first time after
a system reboot. There are no initialization delays in opening subsequent
control windows after the first window is opened. To improve first time call up,
see Appendix B: Troubleshooting, page 154.
During migration, if your legacy application uses a Wonderware Historian Client
control that only uses a user login (for example, through a script), and the
Wonderware Historian Client server-side support has not yet been configured for
the historian database, it is possible that no administrative logon prompt appears
after you migrate the application to a newer version. Therefore, verify that you
have logged into the Wonderware Historian Server at least once as administrator
using an application, such as Wonderware Historian Client Trend.

Using Trends

1. Click View > ScratchPad Trends.

If a previous ScratchPad trend was saved, it will appear in the trend file list.
Select a previously saved trend from the list, and click Open.
If the trend does not appear on the list, complete the remaining steps.
2. Select a Trend Size radio button.
The Trend Position view will change to match the size of the trend selected.

the data ranged from 1827 to 2059, the

the chart. The calculation rounds the
values so as to make the chart easier to
read. Also, a percentage allocation is
added to the final values so that the
adjusted scale fits within the boundaries of
the trend chart. Therefore, the adjusted
scale will be a round number slightly
above the actual data values. You can
automatically scale a single tag or all of
the tags in a trend. For information on
resetting scale back to the original default,

Using the Tag Browser/Tag Picker

Use the Tag Picker to find tags in the Wonderware Historian Server database(s) for
inclusion in your trend. The Tag Picker displays all of the system objects, such as
tags, that are visible to the particular client in accordance with the permissions for the
user that is currently logged on. Each object in the database is listed as an item in the
Tag Picker.
Each ScratchPad Trend has access to an embedded Tag Browser or a separate Tag
Browser dialog. On smaller trends, there is not much space for displaying this
embedded control so a separate dialog is provided.

Opening the Tag Browser Dialog

Click the Tag Browser button . The Tag Browser will automatically connect
to the Wonderware Historian Server and open to the Tag Picker dialog, if the
following Framer InSQL settings are properly configured:
• Server name
• Login name
• Password

If the Tag Browser cannot log into the Server, right-click on the server in the Servers
list, and click LogOn. The Connect Server dialog opens, showing the server name
that is being connected to and the Login ID and password being used to login. If any
of these fields are wrong, you must update settings in Framer. Do not select Use

The Server Name is not editable from this dialog. Enter a valid Login ID and Password
for the selected server. If the login settings configured with Framer are incorrect, this
dialog will appear each time the Tag Browser dialog is opened. To help prevent this
dialog from opening, specify valid login information through Framer. The operator may
retype new values to login but if the default values are wrong, the operator will need to
login each time the Tag Browser dialog is opened until the settings in Framer are
updated.
The values in the “Timeouts in seconds” field in the dialog has to be set to your
desired values. The default timeout for queries is two minutes. The WindowViewer
application collects data from the server every cycle. If the server is busy or it
disconnects, WindowViewer will try to reestablish communications with the server for
two minutes before timing out. All other window updates and actions will be
suspended until the two minutes timeout expires.
• Connection is the connection timeout in seconds between 1 and 600.
• Query is the query timeout in seconds between 1 and 600.

CAUTION
RISK OF OPERATOR CONTROL LOSS
The WindowViewer application will freeze if the Historian Server is not connected
and a window with a Historian Client Control is opened or is opening. The
WindowViewer application will freeze until this timeout setting expires, or the
Historian Server is connected. When configuring timeout settings, it is
recommended that you set the range to 5-20 seconds to minimize the duration of
timeouts when the connection to the Historian Server is broken.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in operator control loss.

Wonderware Historian Client Help accessible through the Start menu contains
detailed information about standard login procedures and settings.

These panels can identify any windows that are in a configured alarm state.
The Navigation Panels are divided into 3 levels: Areas, Cells, and Units. There are
12 Areas at the top level. Each Area has its own set of 12 Cells and each Cell has its
own set of 12 Units. Every Area, Cell or Unit can be assigned a window and alarm
using the Framer. All active alarms propagate up to their parent level, which enables
the operator to find and identify windows in alarm easier.
Additional information on the navigation hierarchy is available in Framer and Alarm
Management User’s Guide (B0750AR).
The window panels will be shown in vertical or horizontal format depending on
preferences set in the View > Preferences menu. This is discussed in Enabling

Detail Displays
A Detail Display is a Control HMI overlay window that contains a single faceplate style
symbol connected to a single block in the controller. Up to eight Detail Displays can be
opened at one time. By default, only three are available in the Control HMI Template.
To add more, see Window Construction Users Guide (B0750AS).
There are a number of ways to call in a Detail Display for a specified block.
• Select a compound or block from Block Select. See Chapter 5: Block Select,
page 127.
• Select an alarm in an alarm panel and use the Show Detail Display option in the
alarm panel toolbar. See Chapter 4: Alarm Bars and Panels, page 95.
• Use a Control HMI stddisp command from an Intouch or ArchestrA Graphic
action.

same monitor as the base window. It will close even if it is currently on
another monitor.
◦ Use the PIN option to keep it open.
Detail Display Types and Releases:
Prior to the Control Software v7.3, all supported block Detail Displays were built Smart
Symbols and placed into Control HMI windows.
The Control Software v7.3, adds support for ArchestrA Graphic Detail Displays.
ArchestrA Graphic Detail Display are not windows in the Control HMI. They are
ArchestrA Graphic Toolbox symbols that are directly shown, as windows, by the
Control HMI.

B0750AQ, Rev W 63
Control HMI User’s Guide Chapter 3: Using Control HMI

ArchestrA Graphic Supported Block Types:

• ECB300, ECB301, and ECB310
InTouch Smart Symbol Supported Block Types:
• All Blocks not listed under ArchestrA Graphics, and are supported by the
FCP270, FCP280, or FDC280.
• See the Block to Symbol Mapping table in Chapter 10 of the Window
Construction Users Guide.

ArchestrA Graphic Detail Displays

There are several notable differences between the ArchestrA Graphic and Smart
Symbol Detail Displays. The most notable difference is when looking at Detail Views
from the main Detail Display symbol.
• ArchestrA Graphic Detail Views open next to the main Detail Display window.
They do not open in place of the main symbol.
• ArchestrA Graphic Detail are larger, more readable, and easier to navigate.

General Features
These features are only available with ArchestrA Graphic Detail Displays.
• Auto positioning of the Detail View.
Control HMI will show the Detail View window on the same monitor as the main
window. The Detail View window will open on the right side of the main window
unless it is too close to the right edge of the monitor. If too close, the Detail View
appears on the left side of the main view
• The Mode options include an option to pin the Detail Displays open while
changing base windows.
• Closing the Main window will automatically close the Detail View window.
• After moving the main window, clicking the main window’s Detail View option will
reposition the Detail View window next to the new main window location.
• A view, on the Detail View window, may have multiple pages of information. The
multiple pages will be accessible via tabs in the main view.
For example, the Module and Channel Status view of the ECB300 Detail view
is divided into four tabs of Channel Status information.

64 B0750AQ, Rev W
Chapter 3: Using Control HMI Control HMI User’s Guide

• The larger window size allows for more descriptive text and labels. If string values
are still too long, the symbol will automatically clip the string to fit the window and
provide a tool tip with the full string value.

Layout
When opening a Detail Display, the window that is initially shown is the Main faceplate
window. The layout and functionality is similar to the Control HMI Smart Symbol Detail
Display.

Chapter 4: Alarm Bars and Panels

The CHMI application comes with a set of menus, toolbars and windows that allow
users to interact with alarms. The default setting for the primary monitor is to show the
Process and System alarm buttons as well as the Process and System single line
alarm bars. The secondary monitors on multi-monitor stations are configured to show
just the Process and System alarm buttons.
The Process and System buttons show the current Process and System alarm state.
The Process and System buttons are in the top center of each monitor. Pressing
either button shows the assigned alarm panel in the bottom of the monitor.

Upgrading from Pre-Control Software v7.2 Systems

The CHMI ArchestrA Graphic alarm panels replace the legacy CHMI ActiveX alarm
panels. The ArchestrA Graphic alarm panels have different runtime features than
earlier Control HMI releases.
• There are no longer resize buttons for 1/3, 2/3, and full size alarm panels.
• Alarm panels are resizable.
• Alarm panels open to the full width of the monitor.
• Alarm Filters, on all columns, can be created and saved at runtime.
• Alarm panels support up to four sort settings. Each setting has its own sort
direction.
• Alarms can be sorted based on urgency by using InAlarm and AckState options.
• Alarms can appear with different foreground and background colors to represent
different alarm states and priorities.
• Multiple instances of the same alarm panel can be shown on each monitor.
• Each alarm panel type has its own set of alarm queries and filters.
For detailed configuration options and workflows, see Window Construction User’s
Guide (B0750AS).

B0750AQ, Rev W 95
Control HMI User’s Guide Chapter 4: Alarm Bars and Panels

Alarm Queries
Alarm panels use a query that collects a set of records from an alarm source. Each
type of alarm panel has its own set of alarm queries. The alarm queries are logically
assigned to the different alarm panels based on what is in the query. For example, the
Device Condition Alarm panel is designed to view alarm records provided by the
Fieldbus Alarm Provider. Any alarm query that collects alarms from the Fieldbus
Alarm provider are assigned to the Device Condition Alarm Panel.
The alarm panels also have the ability to view different types of alarm messages.
When the alarm panel is in Summary mode, the alarm panel shows alarms that are
currently active. When in Historical or Event mode, the alarm panels show a limited list
of the most recent event or alarm messages that have been received by the Alarm
Provider. Default alarm queries that are configured in Framer include the type of
messages to be shown. The type of message also determines where a query is
assigned. For example, any default query that is configured for Historical messages
will be assigned to the System alarm panel.
The alarm query can contain one or more alarm provider queries, each separated by a
space. The format of a query is:
\\Node:0\Provider1\Group \\Node:0\Provider2\Group
\\Node:0\Provider3\Group
• Node is the name of the station where the alarm provider and must include the
‘:0’ suffix
• Provider is the name of the Alarm Provider that is collecting alarm messages.
• Group is the name of the Area or Group of alarms to be shown.
Queries that are defined in Framer or saved at runtime can be selected at runtime in
each alarm panel. Each alarm panel shows the list of queries that is appropriate for
that panel. The criteria for determining which queries are presented with each alarm
panel are listed in this table.

Runtime Alarm Panels

The alarm panels provide the operator an interface to the alarm subsystem. The
CHMI provides three types of runtime alarm panels and one historical alarm panel for
reviewing different types of alarms, messages, and events. Many of the details
explained in this section applies to both, runtime and historical, alarm panels.
• Process Alarm Panel – can be accessed from the Process Button or the View
drop down menu. It is used for reviewing current process alarms.
• System Alarm Panel – can be accessed from the System Button or the View drop
down menu. It is used for reviewing recent system and process alarm messages
and events.

B0750AQ, Rev W 99
Control HMI User’s Guide Chapter 4: Alarm Bars and Panels

• Device Condition Panel – can be accessed from the View drop down menu. This
panel is used to review device condition messages that come from configured
Fieldbus Alarm Providers. Several runtime features are not available on this
panel.
• Alarm DB Panel – can be accessed from the View drop down menu. This panel is
used for reviewing historical alarm messages and system events. See Historical
Alarm DB Panel, page 117 for specific differences.
The different panel types can be individually customized to have different Columns,
Colors, Settings and Queries. The different panel types have the same basic layout.
The available actions and menus depend on the type of panel. The basic panel layout
is shown in this figure.

detailed information about the ArchestrA Alarm Client Control.

Queries
The alarm panel can have only one alarm query active. The query retrieves all
messages from one or more Alarm Providers. The CHMI alarm Panel supports two
ways to create queries in the CHMI Alarm Panels.
• The Tools action bar which uses Alarm Provider format.
• The alarm control's Query and Filter Favorites dialog that uses SQL Alarm
Query format.
Both formats have the same basic requirements. Each provider query must include
Node, Provider, and Group. These fields do not support the usage of wildcards.
Example formats are:

Alarm Provider Format

• Single alarm provider query string:

• Multiple alarm provider query string:

124 B0750AQ, Rev W

Chapter 4: Alarm Bars and Panels Control HMI User’s Guide

Alarm Query Format

Alarm Queries support more than just Tagname in the query. They can include any
additional column value:

Filters
One or more filters can be applied to the alarm panel to refine the messages that are
retrieved by the main alarm query. Filters are only applied to the message that are
returned by the main alarm query. Filters do not require a Node, Provider, or Group.
The Alarm Provider Format does not support or show filters. The CHMI alarm panel
supports two workflows for creating Filters:
• The FILTERS action bar which uses SQL Alarm Query format
• The alarm control's Query and Filter Favorites dialog that uses SQL Alarm
Query format
Filters have the same format as Alarm Queries, but do not require Node, Provider, and
Group settings: <ColumnName> <Condition> <Value>

Wildcards
Alarm Provider Format
When modifying the Alarm Provider String in the Tools Action Bar, only the "*" wildcard
is supported in the beginning or end of the Tagname value. It does not support more
than one wildcard, or the use of wildcards in the middle of the value.

B0750AQ, Rev W 125

Control HMI User’s Guide Chapter 4: Alarm Bars and Panels

Supported Alarm Provider Strings with Tagname:

• \\AW0001:0\IASeries!$System!CMP.BLK.ALMNAME
• \\AW0001:0\IASeries!$System!C*
• \\AW0001:0\IASeries!$System!*NAME

Alarm Query and Filter Format

There is more flexibility when creating Alarm Queries, or Filters, from the Alarm
Control’s Query and Filter dialog or Filter Action Bar. The Alarm Query Format
supports any number of additional fields, not only Tagname. Each field supports using
the "%" wildcard at the beginning, end, or both ends of the value. It does not support
wildcards in the middle of the value. When using Wildcards, you must use the "Like" or
"Not Like" conditions.
Supported Alarm Provider Strings with Tagname:
• Tagname = ‘CMP.BLK.ALMNAME’
• Tagname Like ‘CMP%’
• Tagname Like ‘%NAME’
• Tagname Like ‘%BLK%’

Chapter 5: Block Select Control HMI User’s Guide

Chapter 5: Block Select

Block Select (the Compound and Block Overview window) provides a
representation of control databases.
Use Block Select to:
• Bring detail displays into Control HMI.
• Turn ON and OFF compounds and their associated blocks.
• Expand a list of the network’s stations and compounds, revealing the hierarchical
structure of the control database.
• View a list of blocks within all connected stations, and sort the list by different
criteria.
The Block Select window provides two views:

Command Description
Station View A scrollable hierarchical view of stations and
compounds on the left panel and a list of blocks for
the selected compound on the right panel
For more information, see Viewing the Control
Database, page 147.
Block View A scrollable and sortable list of blocks within all
connected stations.
For more information, see Viewing the Block List,
page 147.

The data in Station View and Block View are not updated until you perform a
Refresh operation on the stations.
NOTE: Block Select only provides data that has been downloaded to the Control
Station. It does not include the Strategy hierarchy because strategies are not part
of the Control database.

Station View
The database is organized by stations, compounds, and blocks. The database can be
viewed by placing Block Select in Station View. The stations and compounds
appear on the left panel of the screen, while the blocks for the selected compound
appear on the right panel.

Stations in the Database

When you open the Block Select window for the first time after installation, only the
stations appear. Each station, represented by a station icon, indicates its connection
status.

Unconnected No attempt was made to connect the
station, or the station has been
marked to be excluded from Refresh

unconnected, displays the same
icon as that of the connected station,
but deletes all compounds and
blocks from the station view and
block view.
NOTE: A Refresh All does not
change the connection status of
unconnected stations.
Connected Block Select has successfully
retrieved data for the station. Out-of-
network stations are displayed with
a green icon rather than blue.
Failed connection Attempts to connect the station have
failed, rendering the data
unavailable.

Expanded Station
The expanded station displays its compounds on the left panel. Only connected
stations can be expanded.
Each compound displays:
• Status (ON or OFF), indicated by the icon
• Name
• Highest alarm priority number (if an alarm exists)

Interfacing with Foxboro DCS Control HMI

Access for turning compounds ON or OFF is based on the current state of Control
HMI. If turning compounds ON and OFF is protected in Control HMI, this capability is
protected in Block Select.
NOTE: If you enable Control HMI access in , you need to restart Block Select to
read the new access information.
Turning compounds ON and OFF is performed by the associated Control HMI. Block
Select sends a message to the associated Control HMI. The Block Select window is
not updated with new ON/OFF status information until all the compounds have been
processed by Control HMI.
Since turning compounds ON and OFF is through Control HMI, these actions are
subject to the logging properties and security of that instance of Control HMI. The
action will be logged by the Platform object for the workstation, if the Platform object
has been configured as an Alarm Provider.
When running multiple Control HMI sessions, be aware that Block Select
communicates with Control HMI from which it was invoked.
For more information on configuring access to Block Select, see Framer and Alarm
Management User’s Guide (B0750AR).

NAD Client Stations Not Being Notified of Changes from NAD

Master
NAD applications are depreciated solutions. It is preferable to use Managed
applications (using ArchestrA IDE as a repository).
NAD Clients may stop receiving notifications from the Master NAD node. When a
NAD client is configured either for “Prompt User to Restart WindowViewer” or “Prompt
User to Load Changes” and you respond with “NO” to the prompt for the client
notifications made by the server, that NAD client will not receive any further
notifications from the server.
The default behavior can be changed by editing the applications InTouch.ini file. This
file is located in Control HMI folder and can be edited using Notepad.exe.
Open the file using Notepad and locate the “ContinueNADNotification” setting and set
the value to 1. Add a new setting if it is not already there. The setting is only applicable
if the NAD notifications settings are set to “Prompt User to Restart WindowViewer” or
“Prompt User to Load Changes”. When complete, the InTouch.ini file may appear as
follows:
InTouch]
AppMode=2
AppName0=Foxboro Control Software InTouch Application
AppDesc0=Foxboro IA Series InTouch Application
LanguageBase=English (United States)
LanguageBaseID=1033
ContinueNADNotification=1

Font Resize Issues

Control HMI does not support the use of ClearType font effects used to smooth edges
of screen fonts. Therefore, in the application, random text object fonts appear smaller
than their actual size.
The Control Core Services use the Standard font effects by default. Use the Standard
font smoothing effects on all workstations, servers, and remote stations.
To apply smoothing effects to window fonts:
1. Right-click your Windows desktop, and click Properties.
The Display Properties dialog appears.

B0750AQ, Rev W 155

Control HMI User’s Guide Appendix B: Troubleshooting

2. Click the Appearance tab, and then click Effects.

The Effects dialog appears, as shown below.

3. Select the Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts
checkbox, and select Standard from the drop-down list.
4. Click OK to close the Effects dialog.
5. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog.
NOTE: You may need to recompile the application windows for this behavior.

Application Window Does Not Appear Full Screen on Startup

The WindowViewer can be affected and resized to a smaller screen size if the
WindowMaker application is exited while not in a maximized state. When you start the
WindowViewer application from the Start menu or click in WindowMaker, the
Application window appears full screen by default and then automatically resizes to a
smaller window. Windows and menus do not appear in the correct location and may
not be visible.
To restore the window to full screen, click View > Restore Window Positions.
To solve this problem, verify that the WindowMaker Application window is
maximized before exiting.
To expand the WindowViewer Application window to full screen during startup:
1. Exit Control HMI.
2. Open the WindowMaker application.

3. Click on the title bar to maximize the application window.

4. Exit the WindowMaker application.
5. Restart Control HMI.

Windows with Historian Trend Control Takes Too Long to Open for
the First Time
Historical trends can take a long time to open on some systems where the Internet is
not connected. Scratchpad trend windows or custom windows that contain a Historian
Trend ActiveX Control takes several minutes to appear when opened for the first time.
This is common on workstations in a secure network with no Internet access. The
ActiveX control cannot validate publisher certificates through the Internet and times
out.

Solution 1: Disable an Internet Explorer Security Option

This is a global solution that applies to all applications that validate publisher
certificates over the Internet.
NOTE: This solution only applies to workstations that are not connected to the
Internet.
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools > Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog appears.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Scroll down to the Security settings.

5. Uncheck the Check for publisher's certificate revocation checkbox.

6. Click OK.

Solution 2: Modify the WindowViewer Configuration File

This is applicable to specific applications only and need not be used as a global
setting.

Process Alarm Button Is Not Updating with New Alarms

On security enhanced systems with a restored PDCs, the group
policies may not be properly setup. This will help prevent the Alarm
Server from creating necessary files needed for querying the alarm
database for new alarms.
NOTE: Verify that this is the issue causing the problem before
implementing the workaround.
