ASSIGNMENT
Do an analytical plot of the movie troy

The mode of the movie is love and war. The movie Troy is all about the Trojan war. The war had sparked
because of the love between Paris of Troy and Helen of Sparta

Troy is an epic master piece directed by Wolfgang Peterson and is based on the famous novel “Iliad” by
Homer. It is set in the period of 1193 BC and shows the events of the great Trojan war. This Greek
mythology drama brings to life the events of the Trojan war written in the ancient Greek epic poem “Iliad”.
The story takes place in the fertile, eastern lands bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and kept by the
gods. Within the cradle of ancient civilization empires are built, wars fought, alliances forged, and heroes
born.

Trojans were the people of Troy, a mighty wealthy city off the Aegean Sea coast. The kingdom of Troy and
Sparta had been on good terms since quite some time but the plot begins when Prince Paris visits Sparta
and falls in love with Helen, Queen of Sparta. Helen falls in love with Paris too and they decide to leave in
secret. When Menelaus, Helen’s husband, finds that his wife has sailed away to Troy, he is furious and asks
his brother Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, to wage a war on Troy and bring back his wife. Agamemnon
who wanted an excuse to attack Troy due to its strategic location and wealth quickly agrees and assembles
all the armies of Greece and sails to Troy.

On the way back to Troy, Prince Hector, Paris’ elder brother finds what Paris has done and is furious. He
however still takes them back to Troy. They meet their father, King Priam. He is equally dismayed but still
backs his son and welcomes Helen. Hector is commander of Troy’s forces and knows the Greeks will
avenge their honor. He immediately prepares for defense of the city.

The Greeks are accompanied by Achilles, the strongest warrior of Greece and his small army of
Myrmidons. When they land on Troy, they ask that either Helen and Paris be returned or they will destroy
Troy. The Trojans refuse their offer and what followed was a 10-year siege on Troy. The turning point took
place when Hector fought and killed Achilles’ cousin.
The next day Achilles called out Hector for a duel in which Hector was killed. Once Hector died the Trojans
had no leader. However, the strong city of Troy still could not breach. It was at the end of the 10 years
when the Greek King Odysseus came up with a strategy and built a large wooden horse and portrayed that
they have left Troy. He knew that Troy could only be conquered from within and orders his strongest
soldiers to hide inside the horse. When the Trojans come outside and see the horse, they rejoice of their
victory and see the horse as a symbol of victory and bring the horse inside, even though Paris objects this
decision. Once the Trojans were asleep, the Greek soldiers in the horse came outside, killed the few
guards on the city gates and opened the gates. Thousands of Greek soldiers entered the city and burnt it
to the ground. The Trojans had no chance of fighting and the whole city was destroyed and its people
killed. Amidst the battle, Achilles is also killed by Paris who puts an arrow in his heart. Paris, Hellen and a
few Trojans escape through a hidden passage. King Priam also killed by the king Agamemnon. Later,
Agamemnon was died as he was strucked by Brisies in the neck. Then Achilles was pricked with arrow by
prince Paris. Helen, Andromache, Paris and some Trojans managed to escaped through a passage through
Mount Ida

The movie brings in a fountain of emotions among the viewers. It shows how a once mighty city which has
never been conquered due its mighty walls is burnt in one night and all its residents massacred. There is
archeological evidence that the ancient city of Troy did exist with evidence suggesting it is around 8000
years old. The city was located along the northwest coast along the Aegean Sea which is present day
Turkey. However, whether the actual 10-year was between the Greeks and Trojans took place is still
unknown. In Iliad, Homer explicitly explains the events of the war completely but it is still unknown if his
story is based on true events or not. The movie is totally based on all the events portrayed in Iliad.
However, in the Iliad, Homer has portrayed a lot of gods and how they were involved in the war. Homer
describes that gods had rifts among them and few of the gods gave the war heat.
