A study was conducted among 318 school children in a tribal district of India to assess the effect of milk supplementation on micronutrient status. Children from schools that received milk supplementation were compared to those that did not. Biochemical analysis found that children without milk supplementation were at higher risk of lower serum vitamin B12 and calcium levels. Milk consumption was found to be the only significant predictor of normal vitamin B12 and calcium levels, though it did not significantly impact vitamin D levels or rates of anemia. The study concluded that milk consumption may help improve calcium and vitamin B12 status in school children of tribal states.
