Unintterruptible Power Supply
An uninterruptible power supply or a UPS system is an electrical apparatus that
provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power
fails. UPS system performs three primary functions: conditions the incoming dirty
power from the utility company to give you clean, uninterruptible power, provides
ride-through power to cover for sags or short-term outages, and enables seamless
system shutdown during a complete power outage.

UPS
UPS Sections
Uninterruptible power supplies are generally divided into five sections;
1-) Rectifier: It generates the charging of the batteries and DC power for the Inverter.
2-) Inverter: It converts the DC voltage provided by the batteries and the charging unit to
AC.
3-) Batteries: It contains the DC voltage required by the Inverter when the main power
failed.
4-) Static By-Pass: It ensures that the load is transferred to the network without
interruption in case of overload or any malfunction.
5-) RS-232 / USB communication unit: It provides monitoring of information about
uninterruptible power supply.
RECTIFIER
Rectifiers are used to obtain the DC voltage required for the inverter to operate, converts the AC
voltage to DC voltage.
Rectifiers can also be used to charge the battery string by providing DC current and voltage
control.
Depending on the UPS types, rectifiers can be 1-phase input or 3-phase input.
BATTERY STRING
As a backup of the rectifier, battery strings provides the DC voltage necessary for the
operation of the inverter.
It consists of batteries with the same capacity and characteristics connected in series to
obtain the appropriate voltage according to the UPS type.
While the mains voltage is present, the batteries are charged by the rectifier and DC energy
is stored in the batteries.
When the mains voltage goes out of the tolerance or power outage occurs, the DC voltage
required for the inverter to work is provided by the battery string.

INVERTER
Inverters converts the DC voltage received from the rectifier or batteries to AC voltage.
Inverters can be designed as 1-phase or 3-phase according to the UPS type.
The AC voltage produced by the inverter is required to provide the properties required in
an ideal grid.
The ideal AC voltage waveform should be sinusoidal and it’s amplitude and frequency
should not change.
STATIC BYPASS SWITCH
In case of inverter overload or failure, voltage is transferred from the backup AC voltage
source to the UPS output with the static bypass circuit. In this way, the UPS output voltage
is not interrupted and loads are protected.
MANUAL (MAINTENANCE) BYPASS SWITCH
A mechanical switch is used to transfer the loads to the grid during faults or maintenance.
When Manual By-pass is activated, UPS components will be completely de-energized.
Loads are unprotected when manual bypass is active, the grid conditions affects the loads
directly.
UPS TYPES
Uninterruptible power supplies can be divided into three types:
1) Off-Line UPS: It is the type that connects the load directly to the mains, if the mains
voltage is within certain tolerances. When the mains voltage goes out of the tolerances it
switches to the uninterruptible power supply position and can supply voltage to the loads
for a short time.
2) Line-Interactive UPS: If there is mains voltage, it is the type that adjusts the mains and
gives it to the load. When the mains is cut off, it switches to uninterruptible power supply,
and can supply voltage to the loads for a short time.
3) Online UPS: It is the type that continuously feeds the loads from the uninterruptible
power source and charges the batteries from the mains if there is mains voltage.
Off-Line UPS
•Offline/standby UPS: The green
line illustrates the flow of electric
power. Typical protection time:
5–20 minutes. Capacity expansion:
Usually not available.

UPS First Start-Up
Load Transfer To Manual Bypass
1-) By means of the “HMI” or the UPS Module Service panel transfer the load to Static Bypass mode following
the procedure described in “PowerLine switched from Normal Mode to static Bypass Mode (Eco-mode) Turn
ON the Manual bypass switch Q60.
2-) Turn ON the Manual bypass switch Q60.

3-) All switches and breakers present on the PowerLine frames (excluded the Manual bypass switch Q60) can
be now turned OFF.
