SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE BUILDING DESIGN

Centre for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 4 [ARC 2126] Prerequisite: Architectural Design Studio 3 [ARC 2116]
TASK 2: DESIGNING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY FABRICATION FACILITY FOR A SMALL CHALET (75%) DUE DATES : 13 OCTOBER 2011 (20%), 15 NOVEMBER 2011 (25%) , WEEK 17 (30%) Individually, students are required to design an environmentally-friendly prefabrication facility to produce their individual chalets (from Task 1) on a commercial basis, for sale in Malaysia as well as (potentially) for export. There is a requirement for the display of 1 completed chalet to potential clients; space should also be allocated for the storage of each component of the chalet, allowing for quick assembly / disassembly. The built-up area for the building should be between 750-850 m2. No part of the building shall exceed 3 stories in height, whilst at least part of the building should be 2 stories. Students should attempt to design a building that is environmentally-friendly in its own right, and also that assembles chalet components in an environmentally-friendly way. Students are allowed to assume that raw materials for their chalets have already undergone partial processing before delivery to their building (i.e. there is no need to melt your own metals, glass, etc, although cutting, nailing, sanding, joining and other processes to create correctly-sized components should be assumed to occur in your building). Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this task, students will be able to: 1. Identify environmental and social needs of a site 2. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in architectural design 3. Analyze environmental and social needs of a site 4. Design architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to an existing built context. 5. Create architectural spaces which impact on users experiences 6. Design a simple public building in a suburban context 7. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users experiences within simple building design 8. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modeling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas. Students will be encouraged to look into the following issues:

1) Embodied energy of proposed building

2) Construction-issues relating to in-situ buildings

3) Thermal and ergonomic comfort of occupants of process-driven spaces

4) Safety and durability of their proposed designs 5) Vehicular access for supply of raw materials and movement of completed components 6) Sizes and requirements of storage and material-handling spaces. 7) Waste disposal from industrial buildings

The result of this research will be a design for a small communal office-cum workshop building consisting of :

1) A front-of-house office area for greeting clients and conducting

meetings. 2) A storage area for housing raw materials, with suitable delivery ingress. 3) A working area for processing raw materials 4) A storage and display area for housing completed components and displaying at least 1 completed chalet. (Note : This space can be 1 combined area or 2 separate areas, it can also be partially open-air). Area to have suitable delivery egress. 5) Separate washrooms for office workers and warehouse operators. Washrooms in the warehouse area must include changing and shower zones. 6) Joint cafeteria for office workers and warehouse operators. 7) Adequate plant & machinery zones. Students will be taken on a field trip to Montfort Boys Town (MBT), an established Vocational School in Shah Alam. Proposed buildings will be located on suitably identified sites within the existing Montfort campus. Proposed buildings must blend into the MBT philosophy of providing vocational training for orphans and disadvantaged youths, whilst still producing a viable design for a SME (Small / Medium Enterprise) type company to design, market and assemble building components for the individual chalets designed by students in Assignment No.1. ALL PRESENTATIONS MUST EMPHASISE THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND CONSTRUCTION BENEFITS OF THEIR DESIGNS (PROCESS AS WELL AS BUILDING), AS WELL AS FULFILLING THE PURPOSE OF ENGAGING THE MBT COMMUNITY OF DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS (20%, INTERIM, 13 OCT): (note : emphasis on concept, design, clarity)
