Impact of COVI-19 on the construction industry

The pandemic reduced construction labor.

Currently, the construction industry has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Which
has caused impacts on various sectors of the industry due to the factors of construction
insulation, unemployment, and the change in unit prices of materials commonly used in
construction.

First, going into the aspects of insulation, we have negative impacts on the psychological
health of all people around the world, including people working in the construction industry
which led to a lower number of workers interested in taking care of their physical health.
Emotionally and physically affecting workers by reducing the construction workforce. As a
result, on-site work was considerably reduced to meet the health and sanitation standards
implied by the pandemic.

Subsequently, we entered with unemployment problems that bring with them economic
consequences within the entire construction area. Affecting all levels such as engineers, site
supervisors, laboratorians, contractors, and construction workers. Since construction sites
do not allow large numbers of people crowded in small spaces, and this is difficult to achieve
in this industry due to the high demand for teamwork required to perform activities
satisfactorily.

Another of the effects were the unit prices, which had consequences within the construction
administration because the prices of materials suffered inflation during the first periods of
the pandemic due to the increase in exports at a global level, increasing the difficulty of
moving materials from one place to another, which in relation to the demand price, raised
the unit prices. This is inflation is caused that many projects were no longer feasible by the
exponential increase in the final costs of work.

All the consequences that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment and rising
unit prices are consequences that to date continue to have an impact on the construction
industry. Fortunately, these consequences have diminished considerably in recent months
and are expected to continue to decrease, since as time goes by there is more regularization
of the pandemic within the industry. Despite these regularizations it is not yet known when
we will return to normalcy.
