 Eva jumped out of bed with a big smile across
her face. Her teacher was going to show them
how to build a rocket in class today, and Eva loves
science! However, when Eva looked at her soccer
poster on the wall, something wasn’t right. She
rubbed her eyes, but everything was fuzzy. Eva
was about to ask her mom what was going on,
but after a couple of blinks, her vision returned.

En la clase de hoy, la maestra les iba a enseñar cómo
construir un cohete, ¡y a Eva le encanta la ciencia!
Pero cuando Eva volteó a ver su póster de fútbol
en la pared, algo no estaba bien. Se frotó los ojos,
pero todo estaba borroso. Eva iba a preguntarle a
su mamá qué era lo que pasaba, pero después de
parpadear dos veces, su vista volvió a la normalidad.

 Eva told herself, “Hmm… that was weird, but I can
see now, so it must not be anything important.” Her
big grin returned, and she made her bed. After she got
ready for school, Eva joined her twin brother, Ricky,
and their friend, Leonard, for breakfast.
“Good morning, Leonard!” said Eva. Her eyes were red
from rubbing them. “Ricky and I are playing soccer
after school. Do you want to play?”

Eva se dijo a sí misma, “Ummm… qué extraño,

pero ahora puedo ver, a sí que no creo que sea nada
importante”. Recuperó su sonrisa, y tendió la cama.
Después de alistarse para ir a la escuela, Eva se unió
a su hermano gemelo, Ricky, y a su amigo, Leonardo,
para desayunar. “¡Buenos días, Leonardo!”, dijo Eva.
Tenía los ojos rojos e hinchados. “Ricky y yo vamos a
jugar al fútbol después de la escuela. ¿Quieres jugar?”.

Eva loves playing soccer just as much as she loves
science.
“Yes! That’ll be fun!” Leonard exclaimed.
“Eva, are you okay? Do your eyes hurt?”
She blinked really fast and started rubbing her eyes
again. She looked at Leonard and said,
“I’m okay! Don’t worry, Leonard.”
The three friends finished eating their breakfast and
headed to school together.

A Eva le encanta jugar al fútbol. Le gusta tanto

como la ciencia.
“¡Sí! ¡Eso sería muy divertido!”, exclamó
Leonardo. “Eva, ¿estás bien? ¿Te duelen los
ojos?”. Ella parpadeó rápidamente y empezó a
frotarse los ojos otra vez. Miró a Leonardo y dijo,
“¡Estoy bien! No te preocupes, Leonardo”.
Los tres amigos terminaron de desayunar y se
dirigieron a la escuela juntos.

 The bell rang and Eva sat in her seat. She looked
at the board but all she could see clearly was her
teacher’s hair. “Good morning!” the teacher said in
a loud voice. “Today we are going to build a bubble-
powered rocket!” Everyone clapped and was excited.
“The instructions are on the board. Just remember,
the less your rocket weighs, the higher it will go.” Eva
tried really hard to focus on the board, but everything
was fuzzy again.

Tocó la campana y Eva se sentó en su silla. Miró al

pizarrón, pero lo único que podía ver con claridad
era el cabello de la maestra. “¡Buenos días!”, dijo
la maestra en voz alta. “¡Hoy vamos a construir un
cohete propulsado por burbujas!”. Todos aplaudieron
y mostraron su emoción. “Las instrucciones están en
el pizarrón. Recuerden: entre menos pese su cohete,
más alto volará”. Eva intentó enfocar su mirada en
el pizarrón, pero todo estaba borroso otra vez.

“Ricky, can I borrow your notes?” Eva asked. “I can’t see
the board clearly.”
“Sure,” replied Ricky a little worried.
“Thanks!” said Eva eager to build her rocket. Once she
started building her rocket, her vision was fine.
“Great job, students!” the teacher said. “Come prepared
tomorrow to fly your rockets.”
After school ended, Ricky and Eva invited their friends to
their house to play soccer.

“Ricky, ¿me prestas tus apuntes?” preguntó Eva. “Es

que no puedo ver el pizarrón con claridad”.
“Sí, claro”, respondió Ricky un poco preocupado.
“¡Gracias!”, dijo Eva, ansiosa por construir su cohete.
Una vez que Eva empezó a construir su cohete, su vista
volvió a la normalidad.
“¡Buen trabajo, estudiantes!”, dijo la maestra. “Vengan
preparados mañana para volar sus cohetes”. Cuando las
clases terminaron, Ricky y Eva invitaron a sus amigos a
su casa para jugar al fútbol.

 “Whoever scores the first goal, wins!” shouted Ricky
as he put on his soccer cleats. “Good luck scoring on
Eva,” Violet said. “She’s the best goalkeeper.”
“Thanks!” said Eva putting on her favorite pair of
goalkeeper gloves.
Eva was trying really hard to focus on the ball. She
was squinting her eyes again. Suddenly, Leonard ran
really fast and passed the ball to Violet.

“¡El que marque el primer gol, gana!”, gritó Ricky

mientras se ponía sus botines de fútbol.
“Buena suerte al tratar de marcarle un gol a Eva”,
dijo Violeta. “Es la mejor portera”.
“¡Gracias!”, dijo Eva poniéndose sus guantes de
fútbol favoritos. Eva intentaba con todas sus fuerzas
enfocarse en la pelota. Estaba entrecerrando los ojos
otra vez. De repente, Leonardo corrió deprisa y le
pasó la pelota a Violeta.

 Violet aimed the ball at the goal and kicked it with
all her might. Eva dove to stop the ball, but she
couldn’t see it clearly. Instead, the ball hit Eva in
the face.
“I am so sorry, Eva!” said Violet. “Are you okay?”
“Don’t worry, Violet,” Eva responded. “I’m okay.”
She took off her gloves and lifted her hands to rub
her eyes when she heard her mom call out.

Violeta apuntó la pelota a la portería y disparó con

todas sus fuerzas. Eva se lanzó para parar la pelota,
pero no podía verla con claridad. La pelota le dio a Eva
en la cara.
“¡Lo siento mucho, Eva!”, dijo Violeta. “¿Estás bien?”.
“No te preocupes, Violeta”, Eva respondió. “Estoy
bien”. Se quitó los guantes y levantó las manos para
frotarse los ojos cuando escuchó que su mamá la
llamaba.

 “Eva, please don’t rub your eyes with dirty hands. I’ve
noticed how much your eyes have been bothering you
lately,” her mom said. “I think it’s time we visit the
ophthalmologist.”
“Who?” Eva asked. “What is that?”
“An ophthalmologist is an eye doctor,” her mom
answered. “Luckily he was available to see us this
afternoon. I’m fine with your friends joining us, but
we can’t be late so let’s go everybody!”

“Eva, por favor, no te frotes los ojos con las manos

sucias. He visto cuánto te han estado molestando los
ojos últimamente”, dijo su mamá. “Creo que es hora
de que vayamos al oftalmólogo”.
“¿Quién?”, preguntó Eva. “¿Qué es eso?”.
“El oftalmólogo es el doctor de los ojos”, respondió
su mamá. “Afortunadamente está disponible para
vernos esta tarde. Tus amigos pueden venir, pero no
podemos llegar tarde, así que ¡vamos todos!”.

 Eva and her friends arrived at the ophthalmologist’s
office. A few minutes later, Eva’s name was called.
Everyone walked into the patient room with Eva. The
ophthalmologist smiled and said, “Hello, my name is
Dr. Eye. How can I help you today?”
Eva’s mom replied, “My daughter, Eva, has been
squinting all day and her eyes are red from rubbing
them. I am worried about her eye health.”
“Very well, Eva. Let’s take a look at your eyes,” said
Dr. Eye.

Eva y sus amigos llegaron al consultorio del

oftalmólogo. Unos minutos después, llamaron a Eva por
su nombre. Todos entraron con Eva a la habitación de
los pacientes. El oftalmólogo sonrió y les dijo, “Hola, mi
nombre es Dr. Ojo. ¿En qué les puedo ayudar hoy?”.
La mamá de Eva respondió, “Mi hija, Eva, ha estado
entrecerrando los ojos todo el día y tiene los ojos rojos.
Estoy preocupada por la salud de su vista”.
“Muy bien, Eva. Echemos un vistazo a tus ojos”, dijo el
Dr. Ojo.

 Dr. Eye asked Eva to read the letters off the vision-
exam chart. Then, she had to look at an object
while covering one eye. Lastly, Dr. Eye examined
Eva’s vision with some equipment. He finally said,
“Eva, you need glasses, but don’t worry, you can do
everything you normally do. In fact, many people
wear glasses, like athletes, doctors, and kids! What
matters is that you’ll be able to see more clearly. Try
these glasses on.” Eva put on the glasses and smiled.
Her vision wasn’t blurry anymore.

El Dr. Ojo le pidió a Eva que leyera las letras que

estaban en la tabla de visión. Después, le pidió que
mirara un objeto mientras cubría un ojo. Por último, el
Dr. Ojo examinó la visión de Eva con unos aparatos. Por
fin dijo, “Eva, necesitas lentes, pero no te preocupes,
puedes hacer todo lo que haces regularmente. De
hecho, muchas personas usan lentes: deportistas,
doctores, ¡y niños! Lo que importa es que vas a poder
ver mejor. Pruébate estos lentes”. Eva se puso los
lentes y sonrió. Su visión ya no estaba borrosa.

“Your mom also mentioned that you play soccer,”
said Dr. Eye. He took out red goggles from his drawer
and said, “You need to wear these sports goggles
whenever you exercise. They will help protect your
eyes and keep them healthy.”
Violet looked at them and said, “They look really
awesome!”
“They look like superhero glasses!” said Ricky.
“And the best part is that now I can see clearly,” Eva
said happily.

“Tu mamá también mencionó que juegas al fútbol”,

dijo el Dr. Ojo. Sacó unos lentes rojos de su cajón
y dijo: “Necesitas usar estos lentes de deportes
siempre que hagas ejercicio. Te protegerán los ojos y
los mantendrán sanos”.
Violeta miró los lentes y dijo, “¡Se ven increíbles!”.
“¡Parecen lentes de superhéroe!”, dijo Ricky.
“Y lo mejor es que ahora puedo ver con claridad”,
dijo Eva feliz.

 “Fantastic!” said Dr. Eye. “All you need now are
some eye drops. You can apply these to your eyes
whenever they are red.”
“Thank you, Dr. Eye!” said Eva.
“It was my pleasure! And remember kids,” Dr. Eye
added. “It is important to have an eye exam every
year to make sure your eyes stay healthy. In other
words, keep an eye on your eyes!” The kids chuckled
as they waved goodbye to Dr. Eye!

“¡Estupendo!”, dijo el Dr. Ojo. “Todo lo que necesitas

ahora son unas gotas para los ojos. Puedes ponerte
estas gotas siempre que tengas los ojos rojos”.
“¡Gracias, Dr. Ojo!”, dijo Eva.
“¡Fue un placer! Y niños recuerden”, añadió el Dr. Ojo.
“Es importante tener un examen de la vista cada año
para comprobar que sus ojos están sanos. En otras
palabras, ¡mucho ojo con sus ojos!”. ¡Los niños rieron
mientras se despedían del Dr. Ojo!

For more than 40 years, the UCLA Mobile Eye
Clinic (UMEC) has been delivering vision care
to underserved and undertreated communities.
UMEC and its staff of ophthalmologists,
ophthalmology residents, technicians, and
volunteers visit hundreds of neighborhoods in
Southern California where poverty and vision
disabilities intersect. As a community outreach
program of the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, UMEC
has provided the highest quality care to over
300,000 patients since its inception, working
closely with homeless, uninsured, and low-income
communities. One of UMEC’s flagship programs is
the UCLA Preschool Vision Program, which strives
to give young, underserved children in Los Angeles
County the vision they need to succeed in school
and in life by identifying, treating, and preventing
vision disorders.
