Committee: Security Council

Themes:Allow Ukraine to join NATO, Russia takes the UN Security Council presidency and
can Russia be expelled.
Delegation: Portugal
Delegate: Sofia Gonzalez Marin

Good morning honorable members of the chair, distinguished delegates and guests,

We are here on behalf of the delegation of Portugal to discuss a number of important problems
that may or may not affect each of us; While it is true that Portugal is not at the epicenter of the
issues that will be discussed during these sessions, we want to emphasize our willingness to
collaborate, establishing alliances and devising solutions to face the challenges that arise, either
to prevent Russia from ascending to the presidency of the Security Council or to address the
issue of Ukraine and its possible entry into NATO .

We express our concern regarding the possible ascension of Russia to the presidency of the
Security Council since we must make this decision in the most peaceful way possible, let us
remember that this committee's main base is to preserve peace and international security and
consequently the Portugal delegation hopes that in this debate the delegations present today must
give their total disposition and devotion in this debate.

Regarding the Ukraine alliance with NATO, the Portugal delegation considers that all nations
have the right to seek their security and protection and we are in favor of Ukraine joining NATO
when conditions allow them .

This delegation hopes that in this last instance, through constructive dialogue and the search for
peaceful solutions, we can find a way to resolve the conflicts to be dealt with.

To conclude, although Portugal may not have a central role in the issues to be discussed, we are
willing to collaborate, establish alliances and seek solutions.
work together to prevent Russia from ascending to the presidency of the security council while
also exploring the possibility that Ukraine may or may not join NATO.

Thank you for your time.

POSITION PAPER

The Portugal delegation, as a nation committed to international peace, stability and security, is an
active member of NATO. Since our accession in 1949, we have worked together with other
allied countries to strengthen collective defense and promote the values of democracy, freedom
and respect for human rights

Portugal is not a permanent member of the Security Council, however, we express our interest in
finding a solution to the problems that arose during this session. We reiterate our opposition to
Russia achieving the presidency of the Security Council due to legitimate concerns regarding
stability. and international security

and we support if it is possible to expel Russia from the UN Security Council as well as
eliminate its veto
Our opinion that Ukraine should be part of NATO when its conditions allow it is also relevant.

In the meantime, we will continue to provide our military, economic and humanitarian support to
Ukraine as we have previously sold.
