Problem Sheet 3 (De Moivre’s Theorem and Topology)

Homework problems (marked b) to be handed up at 2.50pm on Monday 7th of October

1. (a) Find the fifth roots of 1 + i and represent them graphically.
(b) Find the fourth roots of −6i and represent them graphically.
(c) Find the third roots of 1 and represent them graphically. These roots are called
third roots of unity.
(d) Let n ∈ Z. Find all n-th roots of 1 and represent them graphically. These roots
are called the n-th roots of unity.

b 2. Compute (2 + i)(3 + i) and use it to prove that

π
= tan−1 (1/2) + tan−1 (1/3).

3. Sketch the following sets and determine whether they are open, closed or neither
(justify your answer).
(a) {z ∈ C | |z − 1 − i| < 8};
(b) {z ∈ C | |z − 1 − i| ≤ 8};
(c) {z ∈ C | 0 < Re z ≤ 1, 0 ≤ Im z ≤ 1};
(d) {z ∈ C | 0 ≤ Im z ≤ Re z ≤ 1};
b (e) {z ∈ C | |z + 2i| ≥ 5, 0 ≥ Im z};
(f) {z ∈ C | 4 < |z| ≤ 5, Re z < 0}.
z ∈ C | 2 21 < |z| < 7, Im z > 2 .

4. Let S1 , S2 ⊂ C. Show that

(a) if S1 and S2 are open then S1 ∩ S2 is open
(b) if S1 and S2 are closed then S1 ∪ S2 is closed.

5. Determine the limit points of the set S = { ni : n = 1.2.3, . . .}.
