Synthesis Essay

Last session, chapter 1 covers functional language, making introductions,

practical English classroom.

Important highlights I have learned about functional language is that it’s the
language that we used in our day-to-day situation like introducing oneself to one
another, asking for a piece of advice, asking for an apology, etc. It was also mentioned
by the reporter its elements, and these are writing, reading, speaking, and listening.
Basically, these are the four macro skills. These four macro skills occur in any
situations. All of these are applied and used. To know more about these four, its
definition will give us clear ideas on what are these all about.

If we define reading, it is a multifaceted process involving word recognition,

comprehension, fluency, and motivation. The purpose of reading is to connect the ideas
on the page to what you already know.

Listening is the active process of receiving and responding to spoken (and

sometimes unspoken) messages. It is the first skill and basic ability in learning a new
language.

Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves

producing and receiving and processing information.

Writing is a system of graphic symbols that can be used to convey meaning.

All these four macro skills are interconnected with each other and utilized by
essentially all languages.

It was also discussed what self-introduction means including how to introduce

oneself. It was highlighted that self-introduction is not just telling who we are, what we
do, what are we interested in, where we are from, and what we have done in life. But
there is more that that. There are do’s don’t’s when introducing ourselves.

In the last part, classroom language was pointed out. And this talks about routine
language that is used on a regular basis in classroom like giving of instructions, giving
of praise or motivational words, etc.

In this sense, language plays various functions in our lives.
