ChE 211A, Semester 2021-22 Sem II

Mid-Sem Exam, Part I

Feb. 23, 2022
Timing: 1:05 PM to 1:45 PM

Ques 1. (10 Marks) A jet of water discharges into an open tank, and water leaves the tank
through an orifice at the bottom at a rate of Q= 0.05m3 s−1 . If the cross-sectional area of the jet
is A= 0.0025 m2 where the velocity of water is V=5 ms−1 , at what rate is water accumulating in
(or evacuating from) the tank?

Ques 2. (20 Marks) A steady, incompressible, inviscid, two-dimensional jet of fluid (density ρ)
with breadth h, width w (into the page), and velocity u impinges on a plate at an angle α as
shown in the figure. The vertical force F required to hold the plate stationary acts at a distance
L from the origin O. Assuming uniform velocity profile and neglecting gravitational forces,
(a) (12 marks) determine the total force F, and the breadths a and b of the two branches.
(b) (8 Marks) determine the distance L along the plate from the point O.

Ques 3. (15 points) The L-shaped gate ABC has a fixed hinge line at B and is 3 m wide into the
paper. The gate will open at A to release water if the water depth is high enough. Compute the
depth h for which the gate will just begin to open. Given that L= 2 m, lAB = 15 cm and ρ= 1000
kg m−3 . It is also given that the moment of inertia of a rectangular plate about the centroidal
axis = ab 3 /12, where a is the length along the axis.
