EFIS - NAVIGATION DISPLAY
In this part, we will discuss the navigation display. Here is the outline:
 Overview
 ROSE LS mode
 ROSE VOR mode
 ROSE NAV and ARC modes
 PLAN mode
 Navigation display symbology
 Failure flags and messages
3
OVERVIEW
The Navigation Display-ND presents the pilots with mode-selectable flight progress data.
4
There are five display modes which can be selected by the mode selector on the EFIS
control panel: ROSE LS, ROSE VOR, ROSE NAV, ARC and PLAN.
5
The ROSE modes display the navigation data on a full 360° compass rose. The ARC mode
shows the data in the forward 90° segment. The PLAN mode provides the navigation data
on a map with true north at the top. Before moving on to discuss the display modes
individually, let’s take look at some information which is common to all modes.
6
On all display modes, the Ground Speed (GS) and the True Air Speed (TAS) are
permanently displayed on the top left corner.
7
Below the speed indications, you see the wind data. The wind data shows digital wind
direction and wind speed above an analog wind direction arrow. The digital direction is
based on the true north and the arrow indicates the wind direction with respect to
magnetic north.
8
Have a look at this display. Why do you think that the wind direction arrow is not shown?
The arrow only appears, if the wind speed is above two knots.
9
In ROSE mode and the ARC mode, the displays are oriented “heading up”, thus the
displayed data is referenced to the aircraft heading.

10
This fixed yellow lubber line shows the aircraft magnetic heading against the moving
compass rose. At high latitudes, the heading reference changes to true north and a
white “TRUE” flag appears at the top of the compass rose.
11
A small green diamond indicates the actual aircraft track.
12
The FCU selected heading or track is displayed by a bug in the shape of a blue triangle
when within the display range. If you select a heading or track which is out of the display
range, it is indicated by blue numbers.
13
All display modes show the range marks by white dashed lines, whereas, the range values
are displayed in blue. The range selector on the EFIS control panel lets you select desired
display range in nautical miles on the displays.
14
Here, the display range is set to 160 nautical miles. Let’s select a range of 320 nautical
miles. The display now shows more of the flight plan, and the range values have changed
accordingly.
15
The weather radar image can be displayed in all modes, except the PLAN mode. Now,
it is time to look at the display modes individually. We will use the Captain’s navigation
display.
16
ROSE LS MODE
The ROSE LS mode provides you with the raw approach data.
17
The display shows the full runway name of the MCDU selected ILS approach when the
FMS is in the Descent, Approach or Go-around phase, or in CRUISE phase and the along
track distance to destination is less then 250 nautical miles.
18
The reference ILS frequency, selected course and ILS identification are indicated on the
upper right corner.
19
This dagger-shaped symbol points to the selected ILS course.
20
The display provides standard indications for localizer and glideslope deviation. The
indication pulses or flashes when the respective deviation is excessive.
21
ROSE VOR MODE
The ROSE VOR mode is useful when tracking or referencing VOR radio navigation signals.
22
On top of the display, you will see a VOR or GPS message with the runway name if a VOR
or GPS non-precision approach is selected on the MCDU.

23
The VOR receiver, selected as reference, is displayed here. Like ROSE LS, the reference
VOR frequency, its identification and the selected course are displayed in the top right
hand corner.
24
A course pointer shows the selected VOR course from the MCDU RADIO NAVIGATION
page. The lateral deviation bar, which moves with respect to the course pointer,
indicates lateral deviation from the VOR course. The arrow on the bar gives the TO/FROM
indication.
25
When a VOR/ADF selector is set to the VOR position, the associated VOR bearing pointer
appears on the display. In addition, information about the source of the VOR bearing
pointer is displayed in the lower left corner.
26
Let’s, set the other VOR/ADF selector to VOR position. VOR 2 bearing pointer is now visible
on the display. As you see, Number 1 VOR bearing pointer is thin. Number 2 VOR bearing
pointer is thick.
27
Also, the information about the VOR 2 has appeared in the lower right corner. Did you
notice the small underlined M beside the new navaid information? It indicates that the
VOR 2 has been manually tuned by the flight crew on the MCDU RADIO NAVIGATION
page.
28
There is no indication beside the navaid information, if the navaid is tuned automatically
by the FMGC, as shown here for VOR 1.
29
Here is a question. What does this underlined “R” beside the navaid information mean to
you?
30
When a navaid is tuned from a Radio Management Panel, an underlined “R” is displayed
next to the navaid information.
31
The ROSE VOR mode can also provide you with the ADF indications. Here the display
shows the VOR 1. Move the number one ADF/VOR selector to ADF position.
32
Let’s see what have happened on the display. The white VOR bearing pointer has been
replaced by a green ADF pointer. The VOR information on the bottom left corner has
been replaced by ADF 1 information. However, the selection of the ADF 1 has not
removed the deviation information for VOR 1.
33
Now, change the number 2 ADF/VOR selector to ADF. The ADF 2 bearing pointer appears
as a thick arrow. At the bottom of the display there is information on the selected navaid.

34
Notice that underlined “M” is displayed beside the navaid information to indicate that
each ADF has been manually tuned by the pilots via MCDU RADIO NAVIGATION page.
35
ROSE NAV AND ARC MODES
ROSE NAV and ARC modes give a plan view of aircraft position relative to the FMGC
flight plan against a moving map background.
36
As usual, you use the mode selector on the EFIS control panel to show the ROSE NAV or
the ARC display. Both displays show the same information, but ARC mode limits it to the
forward 90 ° sector.
37
The ROSE NAV mode shows the data in the total range as selected by the range selector.
However, the forward range is reduced to one half of the selected range.
38
In the ARC mode, the forward range is the same as the selected range. The first, second
and the third inner arcs indicate 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the selected range respectively.
39
Now, we will look at the data presented on these displays. From now on, we will use only
the ARC mode as the data is indicated in the same way on both displays.
40
This solid green line represents the active flight plan provided that the lateral NAV mode
is engaged. If the primary flight plan is not active, it is represented by a dotted green line.
Here is a question. What does the solid green line represent now?
41
The continuous green line which extends from aircraft symbol to the track symbol on the
partial compass scale is the track line. It appears when HEADING or TRACK mode has
been selected on the FCU to show the current aircraft track. The track line is displayed
only in the ROSE NAV or ARC mode.
42
The lateral deviation from the current leg of the flight plan is displayed beside the aircraft
symbol. It is indicated in nautical miles with the letter R (right) or L (left), according to the
position of the aircraft with respect to the flight plan. In this example, the aircraft is laterally
4.4 nautical miles left to the current flight plan leg.
43
A continuous white line represents the secondary flight plan. Notice that the display
continues to show the active flight plan.
44
The temporary flight plan is indicated by a dotted yellow line. Refer to Flight Management
System lesson for more details on the flight plan.
45
Waypoints, except the pseudo waypoints, are displayed by diamond symbols. The next,
or “TO” waypoint on the active flight plan is displayed by a white diamond with waypoint

identification on the map. Other waypoints on the active flight plan are indicated in
green.
46
The identification of the “TO” waypoint also appears on the upper right corner. In
addition, track to go, distance to go and estimated time of arrival at the “TO” waypoint
based on the current ground speed are displayed in the same area.
47
Of course, you know that this symbol represents a VOR/DME. But, do you know why it is
indicated in blue? The navaid symbol and identification is blue when it is tuned for display
either automatically by the FMGC or manually through the MCDU.
48
The symbol appears in white if the navaid is the TO waypoint and in green if it is a current
waypoint of the flight plan.
49
An airport is represented by an oriented runway symbol in white when it is included in
flight plan and the runway is specified. If the runway is not specified, then the airport is
displayed by a star and the identification.
50
Now let’s look at additional data that appear on the ROSE NAV and ARC displays when
you operate the optional data switches on the EFIS control panel. These optional data
are also available in the PLAN mode. Notice that you can only select one option at a
time.
51
When you push the CONSTRAINT switch, the altitude and speed constraints at flight plan
waypoints within the displayed range are shown in magenta on the map. You can
remove the constraint data by pushing the switch again.
52
If the WAYPOINT option is selected, all waypoints other than flight plan waypoints are
displayed in magenta if they are in the FMGC database and within the display range.
53
Now, let’s select the VOR option. All VOR stations contained in the database and within
the viewable map area are indicated.
54
When you push the NDB switch, the display now shows all NDBs contained in the
database and within the display range.
55
The last option that can be selected is the AIRPORT which is useful when considering
diversion. When the option is selected, the database airports within the display range
appear on the display.
56
PLAN MODE
Now, let’s move the mode selector to show the PLAN mode.

57
Plan mode displays the flight plan route on a static map with true north at the top. You
usually select the PLAN mode during preflight to review the flight plan entered. You may
also use this mode to view details of the route that you cannot see in the ROSE NAV or
ARC mode.
58
The map is always referenced to a route waypoint which is displayed at the center. Do
you know which waypoint it is?
59
The map reference waypoint is the waypoint displayed on the second line of the MCDU
Flight Plan page. You can select a new map reference waypoint by scrolling to it on the
MCDU as shown. Now, the plan mode displays the map with the selected waypoint at
the center. You can scroll through the entire flight plan and display it in PLAN mode.
60
The PLAN mode shows the flight plan legs within a circle whose radius is equal to one half
of the selected range. Since the display is centered on a waypoint, the aircraft symbol
may or may not be displayed. You can change the scale of the map with the range
selector. As you can see the aircraft symbol has now appeared at the bottom of the
display.
61
The aircraft symbol represents the position provided by the FMS. The symbol is always
oriented to the true track of the aircraft. Notice that, the navaids data and associated
bearing pointers are not available in this mode.
62
NAVIGATION DISPLAY SYMBOLOGY
This part summarizes the navigation display symbols and their meanings. Refer to your
documentation for additional options not listed here.
63
Here are the symbols related to lateral navigation.
64
Please proceed when you are done.
65
Now, look at the symbols related to vertical navigation and performance. Please
proceed when you are done.
66
This completes the summary of the navigation display symbols.
67
FAILURE FLAGS AND MESSAGES
The navigation display shows various flags when the associated system fails. Here are the
failure flags that you may see on the display.
68
The feedback messages appear in amber when the Display Management Computer
detects a disagreement between the parameters it receives and the operational
parameters displayed on the display unit.

69
A “CHECK HEADING” message is shown when there is a discrepancy in heading data
between the Captain’s and the First Officer’s EFIS
70
These are the messages that appear on the center part of the display.
71
This message comes into view when a temporary or an offset flight plan is entered.
72
There are also other messages that are displayed at the bottom of display. Refer to your
documentation for the complete list of messages.
73
Let’s complete this lesson with an exercise. Have a look at this display and select the
correct answer I believe you made it.
74
End of course.
