1. Why do we study Philippine literature?
As for me, why do we need to study literature? We, study Literature,
we learn to appreciate words and their power. We travel to other realms and times through the texts we read. We understand about our own culture and others'. Most importantly, we learn to consider multiple perspectives and understand the complexity of human nature. And also studying Philippine Literature is very important because it portrays as a living language. Philippine literature introduces real life situations within the experiential background of the youth to the featured literary pieces. This is bringing us into such issues as environmental awareness, peace education and others
2. Enumerate the 5 functions of Literature. Cite an example.
1) Literature as a Knowledge sharing - This is the most basic and
important function of literature. We can learn many new things about the world with its help; we can fill ourselves with knowledge and become smarter.
Example: The Literature of Bi – ag ni Lam Ang
2) Literature as Communication - First of all, it is the
communication between the reader and the author. Very often, we are impressed by some characters and do not like others. We can agree with a point of view of the author, and we can disagree with it altogether. Also, a book can be a topic for discussion with your friends and acquaintances.
Example: the book of “A Purpose Driven Life”
3) Literature as an Entertainment - Even though we live in the
digital age with all forms of entertainment at our fingertips, a lot of people still enjoy reading books to entertain themselves. After all, books can take you anywhere without you even leaving your couch, and they can provide you with hours of fun. Example: The Lost Recipe in GMA 11
4) Literature as a Self-development - Literature helps us to
develop ourselves. Thanks to books, articles, magazines, we have the opportunity to fill ourselves with new knowledge, cultivate good qualities and strive for something more.
Example: the book “How to win friends and influence others”
written by Dale Carnegie
5) Literature as Pleasure - We get pleasure every time from
reading good verses or beautiful work, or a book with a great plot, or other interesting facts and scientific works. People spend a lot of time looking for something that really brings them pleasure, and literature is something that does that.
Example: The books about Erotic scenes.
3. Explain: "Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe
it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become."
Literature is defined as the body of written works of a language, period or
culture, produced by scholars and researchers, specialized in a given field. Literature reminds us of stories, epics, sacred scriptures and classical works of the ancient and modern times. Yes, literature is not merely a depiction of reality; it is rather a value-addition. Literary works are portrayals of the thinking patterns and social norms prevalent in society. They are an illustration of the different facets of common man's life. Literary works serve as a food for thought and a tonic for imagination and creativity. Exposing an individual to good literary works, is equivalent to providing him/her with the finest of educational opportunities.
4. What is literary criticism and its functions?
the reasoned consideration of literary works and issues. It applies, as a term,
to any argumentation about literature, whether or not specific works are analyzed. There are two types of criticism; Constructive Criticism – is the type of criticism that every great person seeks out. Projected Criticism – is an emotional, negative reaction to something you've said or done. The main function of Literary Criticism is to examine the merits and demerits or defects of a work of art and finally to evaluate its worth. The chief function of criticism is to enlighten and stimulate. The true critic is the one who is equipped for his/her task by a sound knowledge of his subject.
