COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES
USE:
We use comparative adjectives to compare two people or things.
After the adjective we write THAN.
There are two ways of forming comparative adjectives:

Lucy is taller than Eva


Boots are more expensive than trainers
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES
STRUCTURE:
• With short adjectives (one syllable / two syllables ending in -y):
ADJECTIVE -ER + THAN
Your dog runs faster than mine.
My mother is younger than my father.
My bag is heavier than yours.

STRUCTURE:
• With long adjectives (two syllables not ending in –y / more than
two syllables): MORE + ADJECTIVE + THAN

She seems more nervous than you


Lions are more dangerous than cats
The sofa is more comfortable than the chair

SPELLING RULES:
• CVC : Double consonant and add -er
Big – bigger
Thin – thinner
• Adjectives ending in -Y : Remove -y and add –ier
Easy – easier
Happy – happier
• Adjectives ending in -E : Just add -r
Nice – nicer
Large – larger

• BAD: worse

SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES
USE:
We use superlative adjectives to say that a person or a thing has the greatest
amount of a characteristic, compared to everything else in a group.
Before the adjective we write THE.
Like with comparatives, there are two ways of forming superlative adjectives:

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.


Jane is the most intelligent student in class.
SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES
STRUCTURE:
• With short adjectives (one syllable / two syllables ending in -y):
THE + ADJECTIVE -EST

John is the nicest boy in the class.


Ann is the youngest child in the family.
He is the craziest person I know.

STRUCTURE:
• With long adjectives (two syllables not ending in –y / more than
two syllables): THE MOST + ADJECTIVE

This is the most modern building in town.


She is the most successful singer in Spain.
Maths is the most difficult subject.
