SECTION 3: ELECTRICAL POWER & MACHINES

Motor control using a latching relay circuit.

Name: Class:

Objectives: To connect normally closed and normally open switches in a circuit.

To identify the terminals on a Relay.

To connect a relay latching circuit with Start Stop control.

To connect an Induction Motor to the Relay Latching Circuit.

To test the circuit for functionality.

Equipment/Tools: Normally open momentary switch. Normally closed momentary switch.

115V Relay with double ganged SPDT. Single phase induction Motor.
Screwdrivers, Wire stripper/crimper. Spade Connectors. Twist
connectors. Wire. Multimeter.

Relevant Theory:
Procedure:

1) Connect the N.O. (start switch) with the N.O. (stop switch) to the relay coil as in the
diagram above.
2) Connect the motor in series with the relay switch and supply as shown.
3) Test all connections to verify continuity.
4) Connect to 115V mains.
5) Press the Start switch.
6) Press the Stop switch. (Set up and testing 11marks)

Observations:

Conclusion Questions

1. What was the function of the relay in this circuit?

2. Why is Latching/Holding necessary for motor control?

3. Will the motor start if the starting capacitor is removed?

4. What are possible dangers of operating an induction motor with a defective starting
capacitor?
