NO TIME TO RELAX

The weekend has long been considered sacred

by many paid workers. It is supposed to be
the golden time when most of us don’t have to
adhere to the company’s schedule or answer our
boss’ demands. However, changes in the way we
live — from more women working full-time to
24-hour just-in-time production schedules and
the growth of self-employment —have changed
many people’s schedules on Saturday and
Sunday. It often seems that the work week has
invaded the weekend, since chores and errands
that are no longer done between Monday and
Friday get deferred to Saturday and Sunday.

DOWNTOWN L.A. NEIGHBORHOODS

Downtown L. A. is one of the few areas where it’s
better to walk than to drive. Parking spaces are
limited and expensive, shuttle buses serve the area
along with the metro and everything can be seen
in one day. Downtown is largely a commercial area
with office buildings, stores and the like so it tends
to “quiet down” in the evening. Olvera Street is
the oldest area of Los Angeles, although there are
no remains of the first settlement from 1781. The
Plaza is a popular place for street performances,
vendors, and it also hosts the annual Cinco de
Mayo celebrations. On the other side of the Plaza
are other historic buildings, including Pico House,
the first building taller than two stories built in L.A.
Across Main Street from the Plaza is the Plaza
Church, oldest church in Los Angeles.

Hands on!

“My resume”

Purpose
The purpose of this project is to guide you step by step towards the aim of writing your resume in English. Now that
you have your resume ready, it’ll be very useful for you when applying for a job position in which English is required.

Theory and practice

This project has been developed in this unit through five phases. By following the directions given, you were
expected to discover how to build your own resume, what to include and what to avoid. Something that you have to
have in mind is that one of the objectives of a resume is to capture the interest of a specific employer so you can not
use the same resume for any position that you are applying for. The resume has to be oriented towards the job you
want to be considered for.

Development
Before writing your resume, you should have a clear idea of the position you are applying for. You may do some
research through the company’s web page, talk to some employees or ask the employer directly before presenting
your application. You should also identify the abilities and skills you have which are related with the job you have
chosen to apply for. Remember to keep your resume simple. It should be written on no more than two pages.

Wrap up
Remember that the resume includes the following information: a heading with all necessary contact information,
a section that lists your education and training, and a section with your past work experience. It may also include
other sections containing objectives and achievements such as your computer and language skills, rewards, or
workshops. Also be sure to include a cover letter.
