Gastronomy
Chicharrón de pirarucú: Fish with flour and corn flour
with lemon juice. Accompanied by patacón, salad, and
potatoes

Moqueado: Fish served in a plantain leaf with yuca


casabe or roasted plantain. This is prepared by being
salted and wrapped in a plantain leaf and buried in a
hole in the sand or dirt, then lined with these same
leaves and a bonfire is lit in it

Casabe: This is a yuca tortilla that is used to


accompany foods like fish and meat like bread.

Copoazú: This is prepared from a typical fruit from the


region with many nutrients. It can be used for the
preparation of drinks or ice cream, and the famous
“Crema de Copoazú”.
Traditional Attire
Their daily attire is usually very informal.
They use light clothing, which is basically
short sleeves shirts and fresh pants.

Women may wear a calf-length skirt and


white blouse with indigenous belts and
necklaces. As men often fish here, they may
wear white pants or skirt, with indigenous
necklaces and accessories.

There are many folkloric events, in which they need to
use a different type of attire.
Women: Light blue skirt, clear blouse with bare
shoulders and many ornaments.
Men: Long-sleeve shirt adorned with bird figures,
black trousers and a weaved hat (weaved with
the weaving technique)
Indigenous Clothing:
Yagua People: their attire is complimented with
many accessories, which are necklaces,
bracelets, colorful ornaments, etc..
Ticunas: wooden earmuffs adorned with
feathers and metallic supports.
Clan chiefs: complemented with bangles of
seeds, feathers and animal teeth.
Music
Influenced by the indigenous culture and the
countries that border the region
Most of the traditional music is made from
instruments that can be made from materials that
are found in the region
In there music they may use flutes, drums, rattles,
and maracas

Music has a simple melodic pattern
Based off of spirits and religion
Border Music
Music is influenced by Peruvian and Brazilian music
Instruments that are used include: drums, congas,
guitars, basses, and marimbas
Language
Barbasco: Cultivated vine used for fishing which is mashed to
poison water so that fish are poisoned and can be eaten

Grileiro: Someone who steals land in a dishonest way and sells it


for a higher price

Levirato: When a widow has to marry her husband’s brother

Sororato: When a widower has to marry his wife’s sister

Maguaré: drum carved from two tree trunks, used as a


communication instrument

The department gets its name from the Amazon River
It is densely covered with forests, rivers, lakes, and wetlands
Amazonas is split in two: the Amazonian Trapezium (formed by the
Amazon River) and the rest of the department
Home to the indigenous groups Huitoto and Nukak who have influenced
the region
The culture of the region is based off of the indigenous traditions as well
as the knowledge that has been passed down throughout the
generations
