Beautifully Bright
Entering Polished in Salem, Ore., instantly uplifts clients’ spirits. The
salon’s design theme is “bright colors and animal prints,” says co-owner
Kristen Dutcher. A multitude of coordinating bright colors adorn the
walls, including, in one case, solid blue below the chair rail, a pink chair
rail, and green above with fun circle outlines. For the circles, Dutcher
explains, “My business partner Jennifer Lockwood and I took three
different sizes of terra cotta pots and dipped them in paint, wiping off
the excess, then placed them on the wall in random order with our
coordinating paint colors!” The salon is also able to regularly change out
its wall art, due to coordinating with local artists to display their work.
“We decorate with local artists’ work. We rotate different artists through
different themes, like ‘watercolors’ or ‘photography.’ It gives us different
looks at no cost to us and the artists end up selling their pieces, so it’s a
win-win for everyone,” Dutcher says.

According to the latest NAILS Big Book, approximately
20% of working nail technicians do not have medical

do not fall under state and federal mandates for re-employment.
This can put nail technicians in a tight spot when expecting a
baby. Even established nail techs with full books will be forced to
take time away from their money-earning business and may have
a difficult time receiving any disability coverage while they are out.

Q I need help selecting a good UV light. What should I look for? Is price a good
indicator?
If you are a nail technician looking for a good UV light right now, that is both
an easy and a difficult thing to do. First, there are many good quality UV lights
on the market. Perhaps the better search should be for a good UV light with a
great warranty. Each company will warranty different things on the light and for
differing amounts of time. Perhaps a light made in the U.S.A. is important to you. If
it is, then look for one that satisfies this requirement. Lights are just as personal as
gels — find one that you believe in and one that the company will repair or replace
for you if needed.
Second, what gel are you trying to cure? It is always strongly suggested that you
use the light that your gel manufacturer sells. They will support you if they know
you bought from them. You will find that some lights on the market will cure more
than one brand of gel. If this is the case, find the light that has a good warranty and
will cure more than one selection of gels and purchase this light. If your gel requires
the use of an LED UV light, then use the one the manufacturer suggests.
Third, find a light that fits on your table. Many nail tables are small and will not
accommodate a large light unit. There are many UV lights on the market. This was
not the case 10 years ago, so shop and search for the right light for you, your work
space, and your gel. An expensive light is not always the right light for you. Some-
times the more expensive the light, the better the bulbs that are used in the light.
Sometimes, a light is just more expensive.

warts.” Children and teenagers are more likely to develop plantar warts, but adults are not immune to
them. Because plantar warts are often located on weight-bearing areas of the foot, they can grow deep
into the skin and be quite painful. To identify plantar warts, look for firm, round, flat bumps on the foot.
A single wart can multiply quickly, creating clusters of warts. Techs may see small black dots among
the clusters.

— and warts develop. Plantar warts can spread rapidly from one part of the foot to another. According
to the Mayo Clinic, the virus can spread by touching or scratching. The virus can also spread by contact
with skin shed from a wart or blood from a wart.
Plantar warts often heal through the body’s own immune system, but most people prefer to be

proactive in an attempt to clear them up quickly. Clients may try an over-the-counter wart treatment
that contains salicylic acid. When the salicylic acid is applied, it destroys skin cells, so warn clients to
use caution. The destroyed cells should be removed by filing, and the application/removal process
repeated until the warts are eliminated. Doctors remove warts by using an acid solution stronger than
the one available over-the-counter, plus they are able to shave the skin that has been destroyed from
the acid. Another option that has proven to be effective is freezing. Doctors administer liquid nitrogen
to the site of the wart, and within a few days the dead skin peels away. Laser surgery can also be used
to remove plantar warts, but because of the expense, many doctors shy away from it.
Plantar warts are contagious. Techs should be very careful with implements and foot baths after

disinfectant. Thoroughly clean the service area, as warts can be spread through exposure to skin cells.
While at-home remedies have proven to be effective, when techs see plantar warts on clients with
diabetes or circulation problems, they should refer them to a doctor for treatment.
Another treatment option is duct tape. It may sound like an old wives’ tale, but it’s true. The Mayo
What else? Clinic reports: In “duct tape therapy,” people covered their warts in duct tape for six days, soaked them
in water, and then gently rubbed warts with an emery board or pumice stone. The hypothesis of why
duct tape works is that the irritation caused by the tape may stimulate the body’s immune system to
fight off the wart.

What’s Your
Sanitation System?
Sure you’re busy, but not too busy to

I have a dozen sets of pushers, nippers, finished with one client we sanitize at home. I wash the implements in hot

What it is: Açai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a small, deep purple berry that
grows on certain palm trees in Central and South America. Derived from
ancient legend, its local name is “içá-çai,” meaning “fruit that cries.”
Where it comes from: In addition to being harvested from certain parts of
Central and South America, açai is particularly abundant in the Amazon
rainforests in Brazil.
Properties: Available in a few colors, the purple variety of açai berries are some
of the most nutritionally dense foods in the world. The berries are about one
inch in diameter and contain a large pit inside. The taste has been described
as a delicious combination of blueberries and chocolate. Açai are also said
to have fat-burning properties, fatty acids, amino acids, trace minerals, fiber,
and 10 times the amount of antioxidants of red grapes.
What it’s good for: Açai has surged in popularity thanks to its multitude of
uses, which include improving energy levels, digestion, sleep habits, brain
functions, skin appearance, circulation, heart functions, and overall health. In
‘‘
addition to eliminating toxins, weight loss has been one of the more popular
uses for açai, considering that supplements are made with pure açai extract

Where you’ll find it: Fresh açai berries are not available outside the Amazon,
but other forms are available as close as your nearest supermarket. You’ll
find juice, dietary supplement capsules, powders, and frozen purees.
Supplements have the longest shelf life and are much more potent than
fresh açai berries or açai juice.
Other uses: Açai oil has been gaining momentum as an ingredient in a variety
of beauty and cosmetic products, including face cleansers and masks, age
renewal creams, lip and cheek products, body washes and creams, and hair
care lines. The oil contains a large variety of beneficial vitamins as well as
Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids.

A lot of experienced nail techs are loyal hand-filers, preferring the increased
control and touch of hand files over the speed of an e-file. And many worry about
the learning curve of an e-file and are afraid of the damage they could possibly
do to a natural nail with ramped up RPMs and a new snazzy Swiss carbide bit. But in reality, with
the wealth of information and education in the nail industry today, there is no reason that a fully
trained e-file user would be any more dangerous than your average careless hand-filer.
Manufacturers are making e-files today with lighter weights and less vibration than ever, so together
with proper training and classes, which can be found at most beauty shows and nail networking
events, nail techs are using their e-files for more aspects of the nail service than ever before.
Use these practical tips from experienced e-file users to help stay on top of your electric file game.

In her other life: yoga instructor
Restoring Balance
Just a year into Lisa Williams’ now 16-year nail career, she became
ill. “First it was minor symptoms and ailments that eventually led to
serious conditions throughout a seven-year span,” recalls Williams,
the owner of Sculptures Salon in Huntington, W.Va. She made the rounds of doctors,
both traditional and holistic, and got few answers. Eventually, in January 2004, the
medical staff at the University of Kentucky issued a diagnosis: acrylic toxicity. “It was in
my bloodstream and had caused auto-immune disorders. It caused my body to attack
itself,” she says. Aside from avoiding acrylic, her treatment consisted of a series of
injections, detox — and yoga.
“Part of my treatment was to do yoga, so I could find balance within my life again and
reap the benefits that yoga provides. I instantly connected with the physical and mental
aspects of yoga. I honestly noticed after my first session what it could do for me.” And
now she teaches yoga to others at St. Mary’s Hospital Wellness Center in Huntington.
Williams practices and teaches ashtanga/power yoga, a more strenuous
type of yoga that deals with proper breathing sequences and powerful poses.

For her, yoga is first and foremost about balance — in every element of life. “Anyone in
the beauty profession can tell you how demanding and stressful it can be,” she says. “We

poor posture, tension in our muscles, and a poor mental state. Just doing a moment of
yoga can change all that.”
