The Book Thief:

Liesel Meminger, is a nine-year-old German girl who had been abandoned by her mother to
live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann in the village of Molching just before World War II.
Liesel's younger brother Werner passes away when they are travelling to Molching, and she
has dreams about him for months. Hans is a gentle man who brings her comfort and helps
her learn to read, starting with a book Liesel took from the cemetery where her brother was
buried. Rudy Steiner, a young boy from the area, and Liesel become friends. Liesel
understands that her family was probably killed for being communists. She is observed
robbing a book by the mayor's wife named Ilsa Hemann who invites her to read in her own
library. Hans shelters a Jew named Max Vandenberg in his basement as part of a promise
he made to the person who saved his life. Max and Liesel become good friends, as he writes
for Liesel about their friendship, Hans gets enlisted into the military after publicly giving
bread to an elderly Jew being transferred to a concentration camp, forcing Max to leave at a
time when air strikes over German towns and cities were becoming a regular thing. Max is
then seen by Liesel being led toward the Dachau concentration camp. After learning that
Hitler's ‘fake news’ is to blame for the war and the Holocaust, Liesel loses hope and she
starts to hate the written world. She is inspired to write by Ilsa. When an air strike kills Hans,
Rosa, Rudy, and everyone else on her block, Liesel miraculously survives and begins to
write the story of her life in the Hubermanns' basement. Both Liesel and Max make it through
the war. She continues to live a long life and passes away at an elderly age.

The Fault In Our Stars:

Hazel Grace Lancaster, 17, hesitantly goes to a support group for cancer patients at her
mother's insistence. She uses a portable oxygen tank to breathe properly because of her
disease. She notices a teenage kid in one of the meetings, and she learns the boy's name is
Augustus Waters as the meeting progresses. He is there with Isaac, a friend of theirs. Isaac
had a tumour removed from one of his eyes, and now he also needs to have the other eye
removed. Augustus approaches Hazel after the conference is over and remarks that she
resembles Natalie Portman from V for Vendetta. He invites Hazel over to watch the movie at
his house, and while they're there, they talk about their experience with dealing with cancer.
Later, Augustus asks Hazel to go on a picnic with him. The picnic has a Dutch theme where
he tells her that an organisation that grants the wishes of patients with cancer has agreed to
grant his. She is overjoyed, but for some reason she hesitates when he touches her face.
She comes to realise that she likes him over time, but she knows her death will be painful for
him. She thinks she is like a grenade. Hazel experiences something terrible where her lungs
fill up with fluid where she is rushed to ICU. After a few days, she is finally allowed to leave
the hospital, and discovers that Augustus never left the waiting area. Another letter from Van
Houten is delivered to Hazel by him; this one is more intimate and cryptic than the previous
one. Hazel is more determined than ever to visit Amsterdam after reading the letter. Hazel is
not considered to be strong enough to travel, according to her parents and doctors. Before
one of the doctors, Dr. Maria persuades Hazel's parents that she must travel because she
needs to enjoy her life. The pair soon discover that the author they respected was a drunk
fanatic and are disappointed. The next day, Augustus reveals to Hazel that his cancer has
returned and he is going to die soon. Hazel realises she loves him more than ever now and
wants to spend more time with him. Days go by when finally Augustus dies. At his funeral,
Hazel is surprised to see the author from Amsterdam and asks him why he’s there. He tells
her that he is there to apologise for what he did in Amsterdam. Anna soon learns that
Augustus’ last wish was for the Author to write a piece about her. A letter is then revealed to
Hazel where Augustus reveals that he is happy with all the choices he has made. The book
finishes with her saying that she is happy with her choices as well.
