Past and Past Perfect Tenses

Simple past tense of the verb is used when something happened in the past. On the other hand, we used Past
Perfect Tense to show something happened before another action in the past. It does not matter which event is
mentioned firstthe tense makes it clear which one happened first. Let us put it in this way for better understanding:

Past Perfect Tense refers to the action that happened first or earlier.
Simple Past Tense refers to the action that happened second or later.

Observe the following examples:

1. Past: Kristal ate fruits and vegetables. (*ate signifies that there is something that happened in the past)

Past Perfect: Kristal ate fruits and vegetables as soon as she had read the articles about boosting immune system.
(*had read signifies that there was an action happened before Kristal ate fruits and vegetables.)

2. Past: We bought washable face masks. (*bought signifies that it was a past action)

Past Perfect: When we bought washable face masks, the price had increased. (*had increased signifies that
happened first before they bought washable face masks.)

To form past perfect, you simply use the past tense “had” and add it to the past participle of the verb. (had + past
participle)

Here are the examples of some verbs change into past perfect:

1. register
had + registered = had registered
2. learn
had + learned = had learned
3. receive
had + receive = had received
4. leave
had + left = had
Take note of these!

When using past and past perfect tenses of the verb in sentences, you

should remember the following time expressions:

Use after, as soon as, the moment that, until, because before using past perfect simple.

Examples:

1. As soon as the classes had stopped, Marie began to practice at home.

2. The poor student earned money until he had learned to use his talent.

Use before, when, by the time before the simple past.
