Aside from graphing, there are other methods used in solving the system of
linear equations in two variables.
INTERSECTING LINES
If the lines intersect, then the system of equations is consistent and the
equations are independent. The system has one solution.
IN ORDER TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS BY
GRAPHING, WE NEED TO FIND ITS POINT OF INTERSECTION.
1. x + 3y = 6 x=-3y+6
Example:
1: x+2y=33 equation 1
x=y-6 equation 2 in terms of variable x
Solution:
Substitute y-6 fox x in the first
Solve for x:
equation.
Eq. 1. x + 2y=33
Eq. 2. x=y-6
(y-6)+2y =33
y-6+2y=33
x = 13-6
3y-6=33 x=7
3y=33+6

3y=39
y = 13
Checking: The solution is x=7 and y =13 or (7,13)
equation 1 equation 2
x + 2y =33 x=y-6
7 + 2( 13 )=33 7=13-6
7+26 =33 7=7
33 =33
Since (7,13) satisfies both equations, then it is the solution to the system.
The system is consistent and the equations are independent. It has one
solution.
2: x+3y=-4 equation 1
y=x-16 equation 2 in terms of variable y
Substitute x-16 for y in
the 1st equation. Solve for y.
Eq. 1. x + 3y=-4 y = x-16
x + 3(x-16)=-4 y=11-16
x + 3x -48 =-4
y= -5
4x-48=-4
4x=-4 + 48 y=-5
4x = 44
4 4
x =11
Checking: The solution is x= 11and y=-5 or ( 11, −5).
equation 1 equation 2
x + 3y =-4 y=x-16
11+3(-5)= -4 -5=11-15
11+( -15) =-4 -5=-5
-4 =-4
Since (11,-5) satisfies both equations, then it is solution to the system.
The system is consistent and the equations are independent. It has one
solution.
C. SOLVING SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS BY ELIMINATION
STANDARD FORM: Ax+By=C
1.Decide which variable you want to eliminate.
2.Multiply one or both equations by appropriate constants so that the variable
that you want eliminate becomes additive inverse of each other.
3.Add the resulting equations.
4.Solve the equation obtained in STEP 3.
5.Substitute the value of the variable obtained in STEP 4 into one of the
original equations and solve for the other variable.
6.Check your solution in both original equations.

- opposite signs

3x – 3y = 6 revised eq. 1
10x+ 3y =-19
13 x = -13
13 13
x = -1
Solve for y:
original eq. 1: x - y =2
(-1)- y= 2
-y= 2+1
-1(-y = 3)
y = -3
The solution is x=-1 and y=-3 or (-1,-3).
Checking: The solution is x=-1 and y=3 0r (-1,-3)
equation 1 equation 2
x - y =2 10x + 3y= -19
-1 - (-3 )=2 10(-1 )+ 3(-3)=-19
-1 + 3 =2 -10 + (-9)=-19
2=2 -19=-19
Since (-1,-3) satisfies both equations then it is the solution to the system.
SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN
TWO VARIABLES
1. The sum of two numbers is 10 and their difference is 46. What are the
numbers ?
Representation : Let x=large number
y=smaller number
Equations : x + y = 10
Standard Form Elimination Method
x – y =46
Solve : x + y = 10 Solve for y:
x – y = 46 equation 1:
2x = 56 x + y = 10
2 2 28 + y=10 - 28
x = 28 large number y=-18 smaller number
Check the result: The solution is ( 28,-18 ); x=28 and y=-18.
equation 1: equation 2:
x + y = 10 x – y = 46
28 + (-18) =10 28 – ( - 18) = 46
10 = 10 28 + 18 = 46
46= 46

REFLECTION NOTE:
In the lesson on solving problems involving systems of linear equations in two variables, various
methods such as graphing, substitution, and elimination were employed. A graphing board was used to
demonstrate the graphing method, allowing each student to solve problems on the board using
different methods. Collaboration was also encouraged, with students working in groups or pairs to solve
problems together.
The Desmos application was introduced as a shortcut for the graphing method after students
had the opportunity to solve problems manually. The difficulty level of the problems varied, with some
challenging students with higher-order thinking skills (Student 360), while others were more accessible
for average students (Students 180).
The teaching philosophy utilized in this approach was student-centered learning, emphasizing
active engagement and differentiated instruction, combining elements of progressivism and
essentialism. The focus was on creating a supportive learning environment where students actively
participated in problem-solving, collaborated with their peers, and had the chance to apply different
strategies to solve system of linear equations problems.
By implementing this teaching philosophy, the aim was to foster critical thinking, encourage
active engagement, and cater to the diverse needs and abilities of students. The goal was to empower
students to take ownership of their learning, develop problem-solving skills, and cultivate a deeper
understanding of solving systems of linear equations in two variables.
