Smart Waste Segregator

Nature of work-: It is a novel solution/indigenous design to a problem or a challenge.

Rationale-: Nowadays, people throw waste in any dustbin. The waste is not classified as dry
or wet. This habit can be dangerous for future generation as more things can’t be recycled
and reused. People have to find blue and green dustbin and also need to identify the waste.
Some people don’t know use of these dustbins and if they know they might not know to
classify these wastes as dry waste or wet waste. Our project identifies the waste
automatically and encourages people to go green way. People can work smartly using this
project. Hence, it is very useful in our regular life.

Scientific principles/concepts-: Our project, SMART WASTE SEGREGATOR, is based on

internet of things [IOT].

Abstract-: In the recent decades, Urbanization has increased tremendously. At the same phase
there is an increase in waste production. Keeping in focus the crucial issue of Waste management
and recycling, a smart dustbin is built on a micro controller based platform Arduino Uno board which
is interfaced with embedded systems, which enables us to segregate wet and dry waste
automatically and collecting both types of waste in individual containers. In this project, a system
has been proposed which reduces the collection of wet waste and dry waste altogether in household
as well as in public which is non -recyclable. The dry waste that will be collected separately can be
recycled efficiently and lessen the chances of air and soil pollution.

Materials Used-: There are several components used in this project. They are Arduino Uno, Arduino
Cable, IR [infrared] Sensor, Moisture Sensor, Breadboard, Servo Motor, Ultrasonic Sensors [x2],
Buzzer and Jumper wires.

Procedure/Description-: First of all, let’s see use of all the components used in the project.

Arduino Uno-: It is a microcontroller. It is connected with a laptop/PC to supply power and let the
project work. It can also be connect with battery or power bank. It is used to execute the code.

Arduino cable-: It is used to connect laptop or PC with the arduino Uno.

IR Sensor-: It is used to sense the waste that is put on the dustbin.

Moisture Sensor-: It is used to check moisture content present in the waste.

Servo Motor-: It is used to flip the waste to dry or wet waste side. If moisture sensor senses moisture
than the servo motor flips the waste to wet side and if there is no moisture present in the waste the
servo motor flips it to dry side.

Ultrasonic Sensor-: It senses the waves of waste and indicates that the dustbin is full. It passes this
message to the Buzzer.

Buzzer-: It beeps when it gets message from the ultrasonic sensor. The beeping of buzzer indicates
that the dustbin is full and one shouldn’t throw more waste in it.
Breadboard-: It is used to make ground and 5v connections secure. The wires of ground and 5v or
VCC are connected to the breadboard.

Jumper wires-: There are three types of jumper wires used in this project. They are male to male,
male to female and female to female.

NOW, let’s see how this dustbin functions.

When we put any waste on the dustbin, the IR Sensor senses the waste. If IR Sensor senses the
waste, two lights occur on the device. Then the Moisture Sensor checks the moisture content
present in the waste. If moisture is there in the waste then two lights can be seen on the Moisture
Sensor. Then the Servo Motor flips the waste in dry waste if no moisture is present in the waste. If
moisture is present in the waste, then the Servo Motor flips the waste in wet waste. In this way, our
project smart waste segregator does the functioning of identifying the waste and putting it in the
dustbin accordingly. When the dustbin is full of waste, the Ultrasonic Sensor senses the waves of
waste. It passes this message to the Buzzer. Then the Buzzer beeps which indicates that the dustbin
is full and one shouldn’t throw more waste in the segregator/dustbin.

References-: We found idea of this project, Smart Waste Segregator, from many websites and also
added some unique things in the project. These websites are-:

Application-: We can use this project anywhere instead of normal dustbins. We can use it on
footpaths, in our houses and even in various complexes. This dustbin is very much useful in our
day to day life.

Conclusion-: These days, segregation of waste has been an important aspect in our life. Without
segregation of waste humans can’t find much things to be recycle and reused. Sometimes,
human laborers are also employed for segregation of these wastes. These dumps of wastes are
house of various diseases. These people might get affected by the bacteria and viruses present
in the waste. Secondly, it also increases hard work of humans. Our project allows people to do
smart work and not hard work. That is why one should use smart waste segregator.
