ICTC 4104.3 – Extended Reality (VR, AR and MR)

Answer all questions.

Time: Two (03) hours.
Commence each question on a new page. Write the question number on the front cover of the
examination booklet.

1) [25 marks]
a. [15 marks] Describe the terms below which are main components of Milgram and Kishino's
reality-virtuality (RV) continuum.
i. Virtual Reality (AR)
ii. Augmented Reality (VR)
iii. Augmented Virtuality (AV)
b. Assume that you have an Augmented Reality (AR) dining system. It is intended to modify
the flavor of the cookie you eat (by superimposing a virtual color and shape on top of the
real cookie) and generating different smells which are matched with the flavor that you are
rendering (e.g. smell of Strawberries).

i. [05 marks] Briefly explain how the sense of smell can contribute in this setting for
enhancing the augmented reality experience.

ii. [05 marks] Briefly explain the challenges faced by researchers/developers when
integrating the smell and taste experiences in augmented reality.

2) [25 marks]
a. [06 marks] Haptic Feedback is a combination of both Tactile and Kinesthetic Feedback.
Briefly explain the difference between Kinesthetic and Tactile sensations.
b. [06 marks] Identify mid-air haptics. List two (02) example technologies that can be used to
deliver mid-air haptics.
c. [07 marks] Identify Virtual Reality motion sickness. Further explain how we can reduce it.
d. [06 marks] Draw a suitable diagram and explain how Global Positioning System (GPS)
works and how it can track the position in real-time.

3) [25 marks]
a. [06 marks] Write differences between VR cave and VR Head Mounted Display (HMD).
b. [07 marks] Using a suitable diagram, briefly describe the term “The Illusion of Realism”
(in other words, how to combine the real-world and virtual-world into a single augmented
environment).
c. Assume that your software development company is developing a solution for an
automated garment showroom which has robot assistants. The system is supposed to have
following features:
• Through surveillance cameras, the proposed system will track people (identification of
groups and individuals, body size and dimensions, age, gender, etc.) and learn their
‘purchasing intentions’ (what they want to buy such as a shirt, a frock, a pair of socks).
• After learning customer’s ‘purchasing intension’, a robot assistant will approach the
customer and offer help.
i. [07 marks] Draw a high-level architecture diagram of your system and illustrate its key
components.
ii. [05 marks] Briefly explain how the tracking technologies that can be used to identify
location of customers and robots in this proposed showroom.

4) [25 marks]
a. [07 marks] Briefly explain how MinMax Algorithm can decide next moves in a board
game (e.g. chess).
b. [06 marks] Describe the sense-think-act cycle of an agent using a diagram.
c. [06 marks] Briefly describe about Flocking in related to movement
d. [06 marks] Explain the Hybrid Approach in programming Finite-State Machine, in a
game.
