A. Objective
The student should be able to perform earthquake analysis of a 5-story reinforced concrete (special moment-
resisting frame) using the static lateral force procedure and the provisions of the National Structural Code of the
Philippines (NSCP 2015). Specifically, the student should be able to:
1. compute the weight of the building per level and the effective seismic weight (W);
2. determine the base shear (V) of the structure using the static lateral force procedure;
3. distribute the forces at each level;
4. compute the story shear;
5. assess the factor of safety of the structure against overturning;
6. locate the center of mass (C.M.) and center of rigidity (C.R.) per story;
7. calculate the forces to be applied at each vertical element or frame per level;
8. analyze the most critical frames using approximate methods (i.e., portal method or cantilever method);
and
9. assess the story drift limit of the building.

Live Loads (if possible)
Impact Load (if possible)
7. Structural Model/Drawings
Optional: 3-D Model of the Frame
Representative Floor Plan and Frame along the transverse and longitudinal direction
8. Building Weight Computation (W)
Provide a step-by-step computation of the effective seismic weight per level.
Summary of the weight per level and the total weight of the building (W).
9. Design Base Shear Computation
Provide a step-by-step calculation for the design base shear (V).
Seismic Design Criteria
Base Shear Computation
10. Vertical Distribution of Forces (Fx) and Story Shears (Vx)
Distribute the base shear to each level.
Calculate the story shear.
Draw also the lumped-mass model showing the forces applied at each level.
11. Factor of Safety Against Overturning (FSOT)
Check the factor of safety of the structure against overturning.
12. Frame Forces Computation
Locate the Center of Mass (C.M.) and Center of Rigidity (C.R.) per story.
Determine the forces that will be applied to each vertical element and frame per level due to shear and
torsion.
Draw the most critical frames along the longitudinal and transverse directions with the lateral forces for
the frame analysis.
13. Frame Analysis
Longitudinal Direction: Use Portal Method
Transverse Direction: Use Cantilever Method
Draw also the shear and moment diagrams.
14. Story Drift Check
You may use the approximate analysis to check the story drift.
Recalculate the structure period (T) using method B.
