Course: B.Tech. Semeter: V Time: 3 hours
Code: 100507 Subject: POWER SYSTEMS-I Full Marks: 70

Instructions:
(i) The marks are indicated in the right-hand margin.
(ii) There are NINE questions in this paper.
(iii) Attempt FIVE questions in all.
(iv) Question No. 1 is compulsory.

1. Answer any seven of the following questions:

2×7=14
(a) What is the difference between bulk power grid and microgrid?
(b) What is Ferranti effect in power system and how is it reduced?
(c) What is meant by shunt compensation of transmission lines? Give example for the
same.
(d) Draw the Bewley diagram for overvoltage issue.
(e) Draw the single-line diagram of the power system network.
(f) What is meant by surge impedance?
(g) What is difference between shunt capacitor and synchronous condenser.
(h) Write the advantages of DC transmission system over AC transmission system.
(i) What is a tap changing in transformer and why is it required?
(j) Draw the I-V and P-V characteristics of PV panels.

2. A single phase 50 Hz generator supplies an inductive load of 10 MW at a power factor of 0.866

lagging by means of an overhead transmission line 40 km long. The line resistance and
inductance are 0.0195 ohm 0.63 mH per Km. The voltage at the receiving end is required to
be kept constant at 10 kV.
(a) Find the sending end voltage and voltage regulation of the line.
(b) Find the value of the capacitors to be placed in parallel with the load such that the
regulation is reduced to 50% of that obtained in part(a).
(c) Compare the transmission efficiency in parts (a) and (b). 14
3. (a) Explain the Surge impedance loading of the Transmission line & give the physical
interpretation of the terms “Characteristics Impedance”. 7
(b) What is a neutral grounding? Explain the methods of neutral grounding. 7

4. Discuss in detail about the line commuted converters and voltage source converters for DC
transmission systems. Also, discuss in detail about advantages and disadvantages of individual
converters for DC transmission systems. 14
5. Discuss in detail about the steady state performance characteristics of a synchronous machine
operation, when connected to infinite bus and also real and reactive power capability curve
of the generators. 14

6. (a) Explain the tap changing transformers. Explain how tap changing transformer is superior
than other voltage control methods. 7
(b) Discuss the advantages of using “Bundled Conductors” in EHV overhead transmission lines.
7
7. Explain the physical significance of the generalized ABCD constants of a transmission line.
State the units of these constants. Determine these constants for medium transmission line
with nominal-T configuration. Draw neatly corresponding vector diagram. 14
8. Write short notes on any two of the following: 7×2=14
(a) Self GMD & Mutual GMD
(b) Corona loss in transmission line.
(c) Lightning Arresters & Surge Absorber.
9. (a) A three-phase, 50 Hz, 16 Km long overhead line supplies 1000 kW at 11 kV, 0.8 p.f. lagging.
The line resistance is 0.03 ohm per phase per km and line inductance is 0.7 mH per phase per
km. Calculate the sending end voltage, voltage regulation and efficiency of transmission line.
7
(b) Explain in brief about Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Generators and Induction
Generators. 7
