BoneScalpel
Ultrasonic bone cutting with the Misonix BoneScalpel represents a technological shift with unique
advantages for spinal surgery. BoneScalpel empowers the surgeon to dissect bone with the efficiency
of a sharp chisel, the control of a Kerrison punch, the convenience of a high-speed drill and the
finesse of a micro saw but with a new dimension that only ultrasound provides: a seemingly gentle
approach that reduces bleeding and differentiates between bone and delicate tissues while cutting
with highest precision.

BoneScalpel empowers surgeons to perform their osteotomies in new and safer ways than
possible in the past.

Cutting Selectively and with Feel

BoneScalpel is unique in that it offers a tissue-
specific and gentler osteotomy. Its blunt ultrasonic
blade efficiently transsects crystalline bone in a
compression cut while being largely atraumatic to
elastic soft tissues that can deform and move out
of the blade’s way.

Ultrasonic OsteoSurgery
En-bloc Bone Dissection
Misonix BoneScalpel is the only ultrasonic device to date to offer blunt blades for
frontal insertion into the bone similar to an osteotome. This allows for powerful
yet precise and tissue-specific osteotomies. Bone can be removed en-bloc, even
in hard, cortical bone. The dissecting blades are being used for a wide variety of
advanced osteotomies, e.g. for spinal and facial deformity correction.

Precise Bone Ablation

BoneScalpel’s bone shaving tips allow for precision ablation layer by
layer in a more burr-like fashion. This allows for detailed sculpting
of bone and delicate nerve decompression in close proximity to
delicate elastic structures, e.g. in the spinal foramen or close to
the optic nerve.
All ultrasonic tips oscillate in longitudinal direction and
are thus free from gyroscopic effects. In contrast to
rotary burrs or micro saws there is no catching
and tearing of soft tissues.
Ultrasonic bone cutting is blood conserving.
BoneScalpel reduces blood loss and
transfusions with cell savers.
