Dr.

Ahmed Zewail
Dr. Ahmed Zewail is a famous Egyptian chemist, born in
Damanhour, Buhaira Governorate, Egypt, on February 26,
1946. He is one of the most famous figures in the world. He is
considered one of the most prominent scientists in the world
in the field of organic chemistry and biochemistry in the
twentieth century. Zewail has received many prestigious
awards and honors throughout his life.

Zewail studied in public schools in Egypt until he obtained

his high school diploma, then moved to the United States of
America to continue his university education. Zewail
obtained a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the
University of Alexandria in Egypt in 1967, a Master's degree
in Organic Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in
the United States of America in 1969, and then a Ph.D. in
Organic Chemistry from the University of Virginia in the
United States of America in 1974.

Zewail worked after obtaining his doctorate in some

universities and scientific institutions in the United States,
Germany, and Egypt, where he led many scientific
researches related to organic chemistry and biochemistry. In
1982, Zewail joined the California College of Technology
(Caltech) in the United States of America, where he worked
as a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Applied
Physics for 22 years.
Zewail's achievements in chemistry are focused on
understanding complex organic chemistry and developing
new techniques for its analysis. Zewail has done much
important research in this field, including analyzing organic
polymers and contributing to understanding biochemical
reactions.

One of Zewail's most notable achievements is the

development of gas chromatography, which is widely used in
chemistry to analyze complex organic compounds. Zewail
also participated in the development of liquid
chromatography, which is also used in the analysis of
organic compounds. Also, he contributed to Developing
scientific education as Zewail was committed to developing
scientific education in the Arab world, and he worked to
establish some scientific and educational institutions in
Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, such as the Zewail
Institute of Science and Technology in Egypt and the Zewail
Institute for Scientific Research in the United Arab Emirates.
As well Zewail was interested in studying biochemistry and
developing new techniques for analyzing proteins and
biological compounds. Furthermore, He helped develop a
technique called "large-mass molecular analysis", which is
used to analyze proteins and determine their 3D structures,
an important technique in biochemistry. Zewail was also
interested in developing environmental technologies related
to renewable energy and desalination, and he helped develop
some important technologies in this field, such as waste-to-
energy technology. Zewail was also interested in developing
computer technologies and their applications in various
fields, and he helped develop many important technologies
in this field, such as big data analysis technology and
machine learning. Zewail has developed many
biotechnologies related to the analysis of genes and proteins
and drug development. Moreover, Zewail carried out many
other scientific researches in various fields, such as
analyzing the structure of the cell walls of bacteria and
developing a technique for analyzing the human genome.
Zewail also co-founded the Center for Scientific and Applied
Research in Egypt, which works to promote scientific
research. Furthermore, Zewail led a team of scientists in the
United States of America in developing the "nanotube"
technology, which is used in many applications such as
energy, electronics, biochemistry, and many other fields.
These important contributions of Ahmed Zewail reflect his
great influence in the development of scientific research and
technology in the Arab world, and these contributions have
helped in strengthening and improving the status of science
and technology in the region.

Ahmed Zewail contributed greatly to the development of

many important medicines, including:
Cancer treatment, as Zewail helped develop new cancer
treatments, including the drug "Taxol", which is used in the
treatment of breast and lung cancer. Also, Zewail contributed
to the development of new treatments for skin diseases,
including the drug "Clicason", which is used in the treatment
of psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. Zewail also contributed
to the development of new treatments for genetic diseases,
including the drug "Vexira", which is used in the treatment of
genetic diseases associated with the nervous system.
These important medicines that Zewail helped develop reflect
his great influence on medical and health research, and
these medicines have helped improve the quality of life for
many patients worldwide.

Zewail was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry,

together with Bouillon and Walter Kuhn for the analysis of
the tertiary ultrastructure of proteins. He was awarded the
European Science Prize, in 2000, which is awarded to
scientists who contribute to improving public awareness of
science in Europe. He was also awarded the Illy Premium
Award for Biochemistry, in 2001, which is awarded to
scientists who make significant contributions to the field of
biochemistry. Furthermore, He received the Abul-Qasim Al-
Zahrawi Award for Medical Sciences, in 2003, which is
awarded to scientists who contribute to the development of
medical sciences. He also received the award of the Supreme
Council of Culture in Egypt, in 2004, which is granted to
scholars and intellectuals who contribute to the development
of culture and arts in Egypt. He also received the Sheikh
Zayed Award for Scientific Research and Technology, in
2011, which is awarded to scientists who contribute to the
development of scientific research and technology in the
Arab world.
These awards reflect the many scientific and technical
achievements made by Ahmed Zewail during his life, which
affected multiple fields in science and technology.
Zewail died aged 70 on the morning of August 2, 2016. He
was recovering from cancer, however, the exact cause of his
death is unknown. Zewail returned to Egypt, but only his
body was received at Cairo Airport. A military funeral was
held for Zewail on August 7, 2016, at the El-Mosheer Tantawy
mosque in Cairo, Egypt. Those attending included President
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, al-Azhar
Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb, Defence Minister Sedki Sobhi,
former President Adly Mansour, former Prime Minister
Ibrahim Mahlab and heart surgeon Magdi Yacoub. The
funeral prayers were led by Ali Gomaa, former Grand Mufti of
Egypt.

In conclusion of this research, it can be said that Dr. Ahmed

Zewail was an exceptional Egyptian chemist, who made
important contributions to the field of organic chemistry and
biochemistry and contributed to the development of new
technologies in these two fields. He was one of the most
important advocates of science and technology in the Arab
world and strived to motivate more young people to take an
interest in science and technology and work on developing it
in the region. Despite his passing in 2016, Dr. Ahmed
Zewail's legacy is still alive and continues to motivate young
people to take an interest in science and technology and
develop it in the Arab region. The Ahmed Zewail Foundation
for Science and Technology in Egypt continues to bear his
name in honor of his scientific contributions and represents
a model for the work that young people must follow in
building the future.
