1.Define an equipotential surface. Draw equipotential surfaces :(i) in the case of a single point charge
and(ii) in a constant electric field in Z-direction. Why the equipotential surfaces about a single charge are
not equidistant ?(iii) Can electric field exist tangential to an equipotential surface ? Give reason.
2.In the following arrangement of capacitors, the energy stored in the 6μ capacitor is E. Find the value of
the following:(1) Energy stored in 12μF capacitor.(2) Energy stored in 3μF capacitor(3) Total energy
drawn from the battery.

3. Two parallel plate capacitors X and Y have the same area of plates and same separation between
them. X has air between the plates while Y contains a dielectric medium of Er =4.(i) Calculate
capacitance of each capacitor if equivalent capacitance of the combination is 4 μF.(ii) Calculate the
potential difference between the plates of X and Y.(iii) Estimate the ratio of electrostatic energy stored
in X and Y.

4.A small sphere of radius a carrying a positive charge q, is placed concentrically inside a larger hollow
conducting shell of radius b. This outer shell has charge Q on it. Show that if these spheres are
connected by a conducting wire, charge will always flow from the inner sphere to the outer sphere
irrespective of the magnitude of the two charges.
5.(a) Depict the equipotential surfaces for a system of two identical positive point charges placed a
distance 'd' apart.(ii) Deduce the expression for the potential energy of a system of two point charges q1
and q2brought from infinity of the points r⃗1 and r⃗2 respectively in the presence of external electric
field E⃗ .
6.A dipole with its charge -q and +q located at the points (0, - b, 0) and (0, b, 0) is present in a uniform
electric field E. The equipotential surfaces of this field are planes parallel to the YZ-plane. (i) What is the
direction of the electric field E? (ii) How much torque would the dipole experience in this field?.

7.A parallel plate capacitor is charged to a potential difference V by a dc source. The capacitor is then
disconnected from the source.(a) If the distance between the plates in doubled(b)dielectric of k is
fully inserted,state with reason how the following will change,:-(i) electric field between the plates,(ii)
capacitance and(iii) energy stored in the capacitor.

8.A capacitor of 200pF is charged by a 300V battery. The battery is then disconnected and the charged
capacitor is connected to another uncharged capacitor of 100pF. Calculate the difference between the
final energy stored in the combined system and the initial energy stored in the single capacitor.
9.Two capacitors of unknown capacitances C1 and C2 are connected first in series and then in parallel
across a battery of 100 V. If the energy stored in the two combinations is 0.045 J and 0.25 J respectively,
determine the value of C1 and C2. Also calculate the charge on each capacitor in parallel combination.
10. If N drops of same size each having the same charge, coalesce to form a bigger drop. How will the
following vary with respect to single small drop?(i) Total charge on bigger drop (ii) Potential on the
bigger drop (iii)Capacitance

11. Obtain the equivalent capacitance of the network shown in the figure. For a 300 V supply, determine
the charge and voltage across each capacitor.

12. Three charges −q,Q and −q are placed at equal distances on a straight line. If the total potential
energy of the system of three charges is zero, then the ratio Q:q is?
13. Two charges -q and +q are located at points (0,0,-a) and (0,0,a) respectively.
(c ) How much work is done in moving a small test charge from the point (5, 0, 0) to (-7, 0, 0) along the
xaxis?
14. Two uniformly large parallel thin plates having charge densities +σ and −σ are kept in the XZ-plane at
distance d apart. Sketch an equipotential surface due to electric field between the plates. If a particle
of mass m and charge −q remains stationary between the plates. What is the magnitude and
direction of this field?
15. Two closely spaced equipotential surfaces A and B with potentials V and V + δV, (where δV is the
change in V), are kept δl distance apart as shown in the figure. Deduce the relation between the
electric field and the potential gradient between them. Write the two important conclusions
concerning the relation between the electric field and electric potentials.

16. Figure shows two identical capacitors, C1 and C2 each of 1mF capacitance connected to a battery of
6V.
Initially switch 'S' is closed. After sometimes 'S' is left open and dielectric slabs of dielectric constant K=3
are

inserted to fill completely the space between the plates of the two capacitors. How will the Charged and
potential difference between the plates of the capacitors be affected after the slabs are inserted?

17. Why does current in a steady state not flow in a capacitor connected across a battery ? However
momentary current does flow during charging or discharging of the capacitor. Explain.
18. A metal plate is introduces between the plates of a charged parallel plate capacitor. What is its effect
on the capacitance of the capacitor
19. Two charged spherical conductors of radii R1 and R2 are connected by a wire. What will be the ratio
of surface charge densities of the sphere?
20. Two capacitors of capacitance of 6uF and 12uF are connected in series with a battery. The voltage
across the 6uF capacitor is 2V. Compute the total battery voltage.
21. The electric potential V at any point (x,y,z) in space is given by V=3x2 where x,y,z are all in metre.
The electric field at the point (1m,0,2m) is?
22. Three points A, B and C lie in a uniform electric field (E) of 5×103NC−1 as shown in the figure. Find
the potential difference between A and C.

23. (i) How is the electric field due to a charged parallel plate capacitor affected when a dielectric slab is
inserted between the plates fully occupying the intervening region? (ii) A slab of material of
dielectric constant K has the same area as the plates of a parallel plate capacitor but has thickness
21d, where d is the separation between the plates. Find the expression for the capacitance when the
slab is inserted between the plates.

24. A parallel plate capacitor each with plate area A and separation ‘d’ is charged to a potential
difference V. The battery used to charge it is then disconnected. A dielectric slab of thickness d and
dielectric constant K is now placed between the plates. What change if any, will take place in
(i) charge on the plates(ii) electric field intensity between the plates,(iii) capacitance of the
capacitor.Justify your answer in each case
25.(a) Derive an expression for the electric field E due to a dipole of length '2a at a point distant r from
the center of the dipole on the axial line.(b) Draw a graph of E versus r for r >>a.(c) If the diploe were
kept in a uniform external electric fields E0. Diagrammatically represent the position of the dipole in
stable and unstable equilibrium and write the expressions for the torque acting on the dipole in both
the cases.

26.Answer the following Questions.(i) Define torque acting on a dipole of dipole moment p placed in a
uniform electric field E. Express it in the vector form and point out the direction along which it acts.(ii)
What happens if the field is non-uniform?(iii) What would happen if the external field E is increasing (i)
parallel to p and (ii) anti-parallel to p?

27.A dipole is present in an electrostatic field of magnitude 106N/C. If the work done in rotating it from
its position of stable equilibrium to its position of unstable equilibrium is 2×10-23J, then find the
magnitude of the dipole moment of this dipole.
