Microsoft Excel Cursor
Excel changes its mouse pointer shape according to its current functionality. In this document are some
important mouse pointer shapes and their related functionality.
List the various types of cursors found in Microsoft Excel.
General Select – This is the most common cursor in Excel. When Excel mouse pointer is at “General
Select”, it is ready to select a cell or a range of cells within Excel worksheet. Use it to select cells by
clicking and dragging, or click on the row/column header to select the entire column or row.
Fill Data – Fill data mouse pointer shape appears when you hover the mouse pointer over the small
square at the bottom right corner of an active cell. When Excel mouse pointer is at “Fill Data”, it can
fill data or extend a data series. The Fill data mouse pointer does two things: it copies and pastes the
contents of one cell to another cell, and it fills, or completes, a series (like dates, or days of the week).
To Fill Data, click on the fill handle with the Fill Data cursor then drag.
I-Beam Cursor – Excel blinking I-Beam text cursor indicates that you can enter data inside a cell by
typing text at the location of cursor. To reveal this cursor, double click on any cell. An insertion point
indicator will begin blinking inside of the cell, letting you know that you can begin data entry.
Resize Mouse Pointer – This cursor is used to resize columns and rows. To reveal this cursor, move
your mouse to the border lines separating a column or row, then click and drag to resize. You can also
double-click to autofit the row or cell to the exact length of the data inside of it.
Move Selected Cells Mouse Pointer – This cursor appears when a mouse hovers at the border of a cell
or range of cells. When this cursor appears, you need to click and drag to move the data to another
location within the worksheet.
Select Entire Column/Row Mouse Pointer – This cursor appears when your mouse hovers at any
column label or row number. If you click when Select Entire Column Mouse Pointer appears, the entire
column is selected. If you click when Select Entire Row Mouse Pointer appears, the entire row is
selected.
