Directions: Below are 4 parts you are to write for your complete proposal: Idea, Variables, Sampling Plan, and Research
Design. The content for each part is given in green. An example is provided (the part not in green). The easiest way to
do it is to save this document under a different name, delete the example (and green parts when you’re ready) and
replace it with your content.
Facebook & School Performance Proposal (Title)
Idea: We want to see if there is a relationship between the number of hours a student spends on Facebook and their
performance in school. (Concise statement of what you want to learn from data.)
Variables: (Name of variable, followed by its definition, with units & whether Quantitative/Categorical)
1. Facebook: number of hours on Facebook per week, during a typical school week (hrs.) (Quantitative)
2. GPA: grade point average (Quantitative)
3. Work: number of hours student works per week, during a typical school week (hrs.) (Quantitative)
4. Gender: male or female (Categorical)
Sampling Plan: (Describe what method you will use to collect the data. It will either be (a) what journal article or data
source you will use or (b) how you will conduct your inventory.) We will approach students on campus and ask if they
would be willing to complete an anonymous four-item survey, for a statistics class project. If they agree, we will hand
them a paper+pencil, look away, and have them place the survey into a sealed container. Each of us will attempt to
collect 35 responses. One of us will collect from the Cafeteria, one will collect from dorms, and one will collect from the
library and other public areas.
Research Design: (Identify which tests you intend to perform, and which variables you intend to perform them on. A
helpful resource is the diagram below for two-variable analyses.)
