A. MARKET FOR FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES


1. Market Trends and Opportunities
In 2006 import value of tomato in ASEAN countries increased by 11% and imported
quantity also grew by 44% as compared to the figures of 2003. The unit price of tomato
in 2003 was USD 516 per ton which has decreased to USD 400 per ton in the year 2006.
The market for onions has gone up tremendously in the five years time. The value of the
onions has increased by 76% and volume increased by 78% in five years. The unit price
of onion in 2003 was US $ 241 per ton which has decreased to US $ 239 per ton in 2006.

However, the market for chilli has not increased so much in the five year time. Import quantities of
chillies remained quite stable for five years while the price of the chilli has gone up by 15%. In
the year 2003 the unit price of Chilli was US $ 458 per ton which increased to US $ 483 per ton in
2006. Likewise the market for mango remained strong with an increase of 12% in terms value and
14% in quantity. The unit price of mango has decreased in the last five years from US $ 450 per
ton in 2003 to US $ 422 per ton in 2006.
In the five years time from 2003 2007 the market of grapes has gone up tremendously. The
import of grapes has increased by 72% in value and 50% in quantity in the five year. The unit
price of grapes was US $ 1,109 per ton in 2003 which has increase to US $ 1,055 per ton in the
year 2006.

2. Import Analysis
Tomatoes
According to a recent available data the ASEAN countries altogether imported US$ 16.7 million
worth of tomatoes in 2006 that represent a decline in import value by 5 per cent over the year
2005. It represents 0.29% of the total world imports of tomatoes. In 2006 top five importers of
tomatoes in ASEAN are Singapore (81% of total import value), Malaysia (8%), Vietnam (5%),
and Brunei (4%). Annual import growth of tomatoes in world recorded at 11% in value and 8% in
volume for the period of 5 years from 2002 and 2006. Average unit price of imported tomatoes
recorded at US$1019 per ton in 2006. The ASEAN import unit price is very low compared with
the world average unit price. The major exporters of tomatoes to ASEAN countries are Malaysia
(81%), China (8%) & Australia (5%). Annex I

Onions
ASEAN imported 783,000 tons of onions amounting to USD 187.8 million in the year 2006 which
represents 9.7% of the total world imports of onions. There has been increase in the imports of
onion in the 2006 by 25% over the previous year. In 2006 top five importers of onion in ASEAN
are Malaysia (57% of the total imports), Indonesia (20 % of total import value), Singapore (8%),
and Philippines (5%). Annual import growth of onions in world recorded at 13 % in value and 8%
in volume for the period of 5 years during 2002 and 2006. Average unit price of imported onions
in world recorded at US$ 1,019per ton which is higher than the ASEAN average of US $ 240 per
ton. The major exporters to ASEAN are China (42%), Thailand (18%) and Malaysia (15%).
Annex II
Green Chillies
In 2006 the ASEAN countries imported US $ 22.6 million worth of chillies representing only
0.72% of world imports. The trade balance of green chillies is negative in ASEAN. It import more
than export by US $ 8,894 thousands. The annual growth of chillies in the world from 2002 to
2006 is 13% in value and 7% in quantity. The major importers are Singapore (54%), Malaysia
(41%), Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia. The average unit price of world is US $ 1572 per ton and
the ASEAN average unit price is US $ 483 per ton. The major exporters of Chillies to ASEAN are
Malaysia (70%), Thailand (13%) and China (11%). Annex III

Mangoes
As per the available data ASEAN imported about 15,000 tons of mangoes amounting to US$ 22.4
million in 2006 that represent a decline in import value by 15 per cent over the year 2005. The

value represents 2.18 per cent of the total world imports of mangoes. Record shows that the top
importer of mangoes in the ASEAN is Singapore with 62.89 % of the total imports of ASEAN.
This followed by Malaysia with 18%, Vietnam with 6%, and Indonesia (3.5%). Annual import
growth of mangoes in world recorded at 13% in value and 6% in volume for the period of 5 years
from 2002 and 2006. Average unit price of imported mangoes recorded at US $1012 per ton in
2006 in world which is higher than ASEAN average unit price of US $ 442 per ton. The top
exporters to ASEAN are Thailand (50%), Malaysia (18%) and Australia (16%). Annex IV

Grapes:
The ASEAN members imported 104,000 tons of fresh grapes amounting to US$ 133.6 million in
2006 that represent an increase in import value by 36 per cent over the year 2005. It also
represents 2.5% of the total world imports of grapes. In 2006 top five importers of grapes in
ASEAN are Indonesia (33% of total import value), Singapore (21%), Thailand (19%), and
Vietnam (9%). Annual import growth of grapes in world recorded at 14% in value and 8% in
volume for the period of 5 years during 2002 and 2006. World Average unit price of imported
grapes recorded at US$1,516 per ton in 2006 and ASEAN average unit price is US $ 1279 per ton.
The top exporters to ASEAN are USA (53%), Australia (24%) and China (10%). Annex V

1. Market Trends: Opportunities and Consumption
The summary table below indicates that from 2002 2006 the import value of Turmeric Powder
has increased by 29% and quantity increased by 56%. The top importers in ASEAN are Malaysia,
Singapore, and Vietnam. The growth rates of Turmeric Powder in the world are 15% and 9% in
value and quantity respectively. In the year 2003 the unit price of soya meals was US $ 743 per ton

Market Trends: Opportunities and Consumption

The Table below indicates that imports of soya-bean cake into the ASEAN market increased by
31% in value and 32% in quantity from 2002 to 2006. The top importers of ASEAN are Thailand,
Indonesia and Vietnam. The annual average growth rates of soya meals imports in the world are
9% and 6% in value and quantity respectively during the past five years. In the year 2003 the unit
price of soya meals was US $ 232 per ton which has remained same till 2006.

2. Imports Analysis
International Trade Centers trade map reports that the ASEAN imported USD 1,906 million worth
of soya-bean cake in the year 2006 which represents 15% of the total world imports of Soya meals.
The total import I volume recorded at 8,230 thousand tons. There has been increase in the imports
of Soya meals by 1.5 % in 2006 as compared to the previous year. There has been increase in
imports of Soya meals in ASEAN at an impressive rate. In 2006 top five importers of Soya Meals
in ASEAN are Thailand ( 27% of the total imports) , Indonesia ( 25% ) ,Philippines ( 16%) , and
Malaysia (11% ) . Annual import growth of Soya meals into ASEAN countries recorded at 9 %
in value and 6% in volume for the period of 5 years during 2002 and 2006. Average unit price of
imported Soyabean cake recorded at US$ 234 per ton in 2006. The top exporters to ASEAN are
Brazil (66%), USA (27%) and China (4%).

1 Market Trends: Opportunities and Consumption
Imports of Cotton in ASEAN region have remained stable in the last five years. The value of
Cotton has increased by 2% in five year and quantity has decreased by 3%. The major exporters to
EU region for Cotton are United States of America (59%), Australia (18%), and Brazil (12%).
Inside ASEAN the major importers are Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The annual growth rates
in value and in quantity in world are 15% and 11% respectively. The unit price in the year 2003
was US $ 1,252 per ton which has increased to US $ 1,324 per ton in 2006
