Discrete Mathematical Structures (CSC220)
Duration: 3 hours Max. Marks: 100
Note: i) Answer any TWO full questions from UNIT-I, any TWO full questions from
UNIT-II and any ONE full question from UNIT-III.
ii) Missing data may be suitably assumed wherever necessary with
justification.
UNIT-I
1 a. Translate the following into English sentences.
(i) x ( (xy+1)
(ii) “x has sent an Email to y” denoted by Q(x,y). x & y consists a all the students
in the class x Q (x , y).

Translate the following into logical expressions.


(iii) Everyone in your class has cellular phone.
(iv) Some students write all the questions of this paper. (08 marks)
b. Let p and q be the propositions “ The election is declared” and “ the votes has been
counted” respectively. Express the following statements in English. ‫ך‬q →‫ך‬p and also write
converse and inverse in English and logical expression for the same. (06 marks)
c. Show that . Where A,B & C are the sets. (06 marks)
2 a. Determine whether the two if conditions are equivalent using laws.

b. Prove the following either direct or indirect method

3 a. For the collection of premises, what relevant conclusions can be drawn? Explain the rules
of inference used to obtain each conclusion from the premises
“if I eat spicy food, then I have strange dreams”, I have strange dreams if there is a thunder
while I sleep”, I do not have strange dreams” (08 marks)
b. Let f and g be the functions from the set of real numbers to itself defined by f(x)=2x+5 and
g(x)=(1/2)(x-5). Find the composition of g and f. (06 marks)
c. Define domain and range of the function. Explain with examples for different types of
functions. (06 marks)

5 a. Draw the directed graph for the relation R from A={0,1,2,3,4} to B={3,6,9} such that R is
(A ∩B) X B and write the matrix for the relation and name the properties which it satisfy. (08 marks)
b. How many one to one functions can exists from the set of teachers to the set of courses.
Assume that cardinality of both the sets equal. Give one example. (06 marks)
c. 1 to 100 decimal numbers are represented by 6 bit binary numbers. How many strings are
ends and begins with 1. (06 marks)
6 a. Let R1={(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(3,3),(4,4)} and R2={(1,1), (1,2), (2,1),
(2,2),(2,3),(3,1),(3,2),(3,3),(3,4)}.
