ART APPRECIATION

ASSIGNMENT 107

NAME: Maria Gabriela Nikkie Pangilinan YR & SEC: BEED 1-1 ISKOR: ________

Write the meaning of the following words:

1. Stone Age
Stone Age is the prehistoric cultural stage or level of human development, characterized by the creation
and use of stone tools. The Stone Age, whose origin coincides with the discovery of the oldest known
stone tools, which have been dated to some 3.3 million years ago. Stone Age art illustrates early human
creativity through small portable objects, cave paintings, and early sculpture and architecture.

2. Paleolithic Art
Paleolithic art is the oldest type of prehistoric art. Paleolithic cave paintings composed of hand stencils
and basic geometric forms are dated slightly earlier, dating back at least 40,000 years. Paleolithic cave
paintings demonstrate early humans’ capacity to give meaning to their surroundings and communicate
with others. The most common themes in cave paintings are large wild animals, such as bison, horses,
aurochs, and deer.

3. Neolithic Art
Neolithic art describes all arts and crafts created by societies who had abandoned the semi-nomadic
lifestyle of hunting and gathering food in favour of farming and animal husbandry. Neolithic were
becoming adept at refining farming techniques and building up domesticated herds of their own
animals. With an ever-increasing, steady supply of grain and meat.

4. Expansionism
It is as a field is often done through experimentation and sharing of the results with others in the same
field. Some artists have found looking at ways to do things outside of established schools of art is
helpful in the creative process, and some of them have expanded knowledge in the field by combining
artistic techniques in new ways.

5. Naturalism
Naturalism in art represents the orientation of artists towards the most natural forms in their work. It is
also based on the idea of recording an authentic moment instead of artistic intervention in terms of
scene and theme. This tendency can be recognized either in individual elements of the work of art or
in its entirety. As such, this term is used for the purposes of analyzing this artistic trend regardless of
the time period in which the work was created.
6. Pre-historic period
It refers to the extended period of time before written historical records began. Prehistoric art, therefore,
is any example of art made by humans before the beginning of written history. The eras of human
prehistory are broadly split into the Paleolithic, or old stone age, the Mesolithic, or middle stone age,
and the Neolithic, or new stone age.

7. Old Kingdom
Old Kingdom featured large eyes and a lack of musculature. Tombs and temples were made out of
stone to create long-lasting structures in order to permanently house the eternal spirits of the dead and
Gods. The Old Kingdom is most well-known for its innovation of the true pyramid as royal tombs.

8. New Kingdom
The art of the New Kingdom (1570–1342 BC) can be viewed as the final development of the classic
Egyptian style of the Middle Kingdom, a combination of the monumental forms of the Old Kingdom and
the drive and inspiration of the Middle Kingdom. The paintings of this period are noted for boldness of
design and controlled vitality. In sculpture the emphasis is on bulk, solidity, and impersonaliage

9. Narmer Pallete
The Narmer Palette is a ceremonial engraving depicting the first dynasty king Narmer (Menes)
defeating his enemies and uniting Upper and Lower Egypt into one kingdom. It also acts as a perfect
example of the primitive artistic design of the 31st century BC. The Narmer Palette acts as a reminder
of the past time when ancient civilizations transformed into kingdoms and empires and seek to construct
constructions that would stand the test of time and achieve immortality.
