Structural Analysis - I
Date :08/12/2022 Time :9:30AM- 12:30PM
Max. Marks:60
Instructions :
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Write each section in a separate answer book.
3. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
4. Draw diagrams/figures whenever necessary.
5. Figures to the right indicate full marks allocated to that question.
6. Follow usual meaning of notations/abbreviations.
SECTION - 1
Q 1 Answer the following (Any 1) [9]
I) A three hinged parabolic arch has a span 40 m and central rise 4m. It carries udl of 3kN/m over left 8m
span. Calculate maximum positive and negative bending moment and draw bending moment diagram.

II) The horizontal span of a suspension cable is 50m. The right-hand support B is higher than the left-hand
support A by 10m. The dip of the lowest point C below A is 4m. It carries a uniformly distributed load of
10 kN/m over the entire span. Find i) Maximum tension in the cable and ii) Length of the cable.

Q 2 Answer the following (Any 1) [9]

I)  A simply supported girder has a span of 40m. Six-wheel loads 55 kN each, spaced 3 m apart cross the
girder from left to right. Find BM at section 10m from the left end support.

II) Two-wheel loads 40 kN and 80 kN with fixed distance 3 m between them and 50 kN load leading,
crosses a beam of span 10 m from left to right. Draw the influence line for shear force and bending
moment at section 3 m from left support and find the maximum value of shear force and bending
moment at this section.

Q 3 Answer the following in detail. (Any 2) [12]

I) Calculate degree of static indeterminancy for the frames shown in
figure.

II) Draw SFD and BMD for the frame as shown in figure.
III) Find the forces in members AB, BD, and DE of plane truss loaded as shown in fig.

SECTION - 2

Q 4 A) Answer the following in brief. (Any 2) [4]

I) Write down the assumptions for Euler’s formula.

II) Explain short column including equation of it.

III) Write a short note on strut.

Q 4 B) Answer the following . (Any 1) [5]

I) A hollow circular pipe having internal diameter 400 mm and 50 mm thickness is used as a column and
length 4 meter. Take Rankine’s constant = 1/4800 and crushing stress value as 335 N/mm2. Find
crippling load by Euler’s formula and critical load Rankine’s formula. Both ends are hinged. E= 2 X 105
N/mm2.

II) A hollow rectangle column having outside dimension 200 mm X 160 mm and inside dimensions 160 mm
X 120 mm. Its length is 6.0 m and both ends are hinged. Find Euler’s load if E= 2 X 105 N/mm2 .

Q 5 A) Draw shear stress distribution diagram for I- section and T- Section. [3]

Q 5 B) Answer following (Any One) [6]

I) Compare moment of resistance of circular section and rectangular section made from same material
and having same cross-sectional area. The circular cross section is having 90mm diameter and
rectangular cross section is having width 0.4 times the depth.

II) A rolled steel joist of I Section overall depth 450 mm x 150 mm wide has flange and web of 14 mm thick.
If permissible shear stress is limited to 80 N/mm2, Find the value of point load at centre of simply
supported span of 8m.
Q 6 Answer the following in detail. (Any 2) [12]
I) Determine slope and deflection at the free end of a cantilever beam shown in figure by Conjugate beam
method. Take E=200GPa and I = 2 x 108 mm4
II) For a simply supported beam shown in figure Calculate slope at each support by double integration
method. Take E=200GPa and I = 6.5 x 108
mm4

III) For a simply supported beam shown in figure Calculate slope at each support by macaulay’s method.
