Design of Concrete Structures

Exercise sheet nº 6 May 2023

1) Design an isolated footing of a column with a cross-section of 0.50×0.70m2 (bx×by), subject to the
following design forces:
Combination 1: NEd = 3200 kN; MEd,x = ±400 kNm; MEd,y = 0
Combination 2: NEd = 2300 kN; MEd,x = ±270 kNm; MEd,y = 250 kNm
Materials: C25/30, A500.
a) Determine the in-plane dimensions of the footing considering allowable contact stress of 450 kPa
(design value).
b) Determine the depth of the footing taking into account the necessary safety verifications for
punching shear.
c) Design all the necessary reinforcements and represent them in a construction drawing.

2) Consider the 0.40×1.00 m2 column P with an eccentric foundation with in-plan dimensions
1.60×4.80 m2. The footing has a thickness h1 and contains a stiffening beam with a height h2. The
columns are subjected to the following forces: NEd = 1850 kN e MEd,y = 1480 kNm.
Materials: C25/30, A500

a) Taking into account the design forces given above and the design value of the allowable stress
Rd = 250kPa, check the in-plane dimensions of the foundation. If they are not sufficient, change
them.
b) Determine the height of the footing h1, justifying the calculation procedure adopted to guarantee
shear safety.
c) Determine the height of the stiffening beam h2 taking into account the maximum installed forces.
d) Design all the reinforcements and represent the resulting layout in two orthogonal sections.
e) Define and represent in a longitudinal section the connection of the column reinforcement into
the foundation (625 per face). Indicate the anchorage regions and the corresponding lengths.
3) Two 3.5m spaced building columns P1 e P2 are represented in the figure, each with a cross-section
of 0.400.40 m2. The columns are subjected to the following design forces at the base:
P1: NEd,1 = 1800 kN MEd,1 = 100 kNm
P2: NEd,2 = 2100 kN MEd,2 = 145 kNm
Consider allowable contact stress of 300 kPa (design value). Materials: C25/30, A500.

a) Considering a combined footing for the two columns, determine the in-plane dimensions of the
footing. Define the relative distances of the footing limits to each of the columns so that constant
contact stress can be assumed.
b) Determine the depth of the footing taking into account the necessary safety verifications for
punching shear.
c) Design all the necessary reinforcements and represent them in a construction drawing.

4) Two 6.0m spaced building columns P1 e P2 are represented in the figure. The columns are subjected
to the following design forces at the base:
P1: NEd,1 = 1200 kN P2: NEd,2 = 1800 kN
Taking into account that the edge of column P1 is adjacent to the property line, a strap footing is
planned. Consider allowable contact stress of 450 kPa (design value). Materials: C25/30, A500.

a) Determine the in-plane dimensions of the footings for columns P1 and P2.
b) Determine the depth of the footing taking into account the necessary safety verifications for shear
or punching shear, where appropriate.
c) Define the cross-section dimension of the strap beam, taking into account both the acting shear
forces and bending moments.
d) Design all the reinforcements of the footings and strap beam. Represent them in longitudinal and
transversal sections, defining all the necessary dimensions.
