DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES

July 04, 2022 “Recurso” – Global Duration: 120 minutes

1) (Punctuation:5/20) The represented structure is the facade of a reinforced concrete (RC) building. It has two
vertical rigid elements at the left and right ends, marked as LR and RR in the figure. Between the LR and RR rigid
elements a 18.0m long RC beam, with a width h = hcr = 0.30m, is inserted monolithically. It may be assumed that
the longitudinal deformation of this RC beam is totally prevented by the LR and RR rigid elements. Data: C30/37,
A500, cnom = 25mm.

Considering that:
 the free axial contraction of the RC beam, due to the lowering of the temperature and the concrete
shrinkage, is restricted by the LR an RR rigid elements;
 the predominant action effect on the beam is the axial force due to the restriction to the imposed
deformations:
a) (15%) Schematize the cracking pattern that will be formed on the RC beam, as a consequence of this restriction.
Assume that the beam has minimum reinforcement, arranged in the horizontal direction and along the entire
height of the cross-section.
b) (65%) Determine the minimum horizontal reinforcement to be provided on the RC beam, using 20 bars, in
order to ensure that the maximum width of cracks due to the restriction satisfies the condition wk ≤ 0.40mm.
For this calculation do not compute wk, but indicate which of the tables of EC2 must be applied, and introduce
the necessary corrections.
c) (20%) Draw the cross-section of the RC beam to a 1/20 scale, indicating the reinforcement calculated in b).

2) (Punctuation:5/20) Consider the continuous one-way slab represented in the figure, reinforced in one direction,
constituted by a large number of 5.0m long spans. The slab has a thickness h = 0.20m (d = 0.17m). In the ultimate
limit state the slab supports a uniformly distributed load pEd = 28kN/m2 that acts simultaneously in all spans, and
already includes the self-weight of the slab. Given the geometry and loading conditions, each span performs like
an element clamped on both extremities (‘elemento duplamente encastrado’). Materials: C30/37, A500 (high
bond, class C).

a) (20%) Prove that using an Elastic Analysis, and considering that the upper reinforcement over the supports
consists of 10//0.15, it is not possible to demonstrate the safety of the slab in the ultimate limit state of flexural
strength.
b) (40%) Demonstrate that for this slab all the conditions established in EC2 are satisfied to allow the use of a
Plastic Analysis. Based on a Plastic Analysis determine the bottom reinforcement A+s required at mid-span,
using 10 bars, in order to guarantee the safety of the slab in the ultimate limit state of flexural strength, under
the ultimate design load pEd = 28kN/m2.
c) (40%) Calculate the maximum stress installed in the steel reinforcement, in the characteristic combination of
actions. For this purpose, consider that the characteristic value of the uniform load installed in all slab spans is
pcc = 15kN/m2. Justify in which section of the beam (support or mid-span) the referred steel stress should be
calculated. [NOTE: to calculate the stress on the reinforcement under service conditions you can adopt the
approximate expression s  M/(0.9×d×As)].

3) (Punctuation:5/20) The plan below represents a two-say solid slab with thickness h = 0.20m (d = 0.16m),
constituted by the panels L1 and L2. The slab is supported on beams, except in the alignment 1 where it is
monolithically connected to a reinforced concrete wall. Consider that the slab is subjected to the following
distributed vertical loads (characteristic values): (i) 8kN/m2 permanent (includes self-weight); (ii) 5kN/m2 for live
load (1 = 0.7; 2 = 0.5). Data: C25/30, A500.

a) (35%) Determine the bending moments in the panel L1 using the tables provided in the Annex and determine
de corresponding reinforcements. Ensure the equilibrium of negative moments with the adjacent panel L2.
[NOTE: for simplicity, when calculating the reinforcement you can adopt an internal lever arm z = 0.9d].
b) (35%) Quantify the top reinforcement of panel L1 and represent it in the attached drawing, indicating its correct
positioning and dimensions. Include all the necessary additional reinforcements.
c) (30%) Check if the thickness of the slab complies with the limit of deformation considering the span/depth
ratio, based on EC2 equation 7.16. [NOTE: for simplicity, the reinforcement tensile stress in the cracked
section can be calculated considering an internal forces arm z=0.9d].

4) (Punctuation:5/20) Consider the column represented in the figure subjected to an axial force NEd = 1450kN. The
column rests on a rectangular footing with in plan dimensions BxxBy, with By = 2.20m. In the X-direction the
column is unbraced, the 2nd order effects have to be taken into account, and the 1st order bending moments
(including geometrical imperfections) are given in the figure. Consider that in Y-direction the 2nd order effects
can be neglected and 1st order bending moments are null. Data: C30/37, A500.

a) (20%) Draw the 2nd order deformed configuration of the column along the X direction and calculate the
corresponding effective length, lo.
b) (40%) Using the method based on the nominal curvature specified in the EC2 and considering that the nominal
curvature is (1/r) = 8.8x10-3 m-1, determine the final internal forces for the design of the bottom section of the
column. Design the longitudinal reinforcement using the design chart for symmetrically reinforced cross-
sections in the Annex and draw the cross-section with the necessary detail to allow the proper execution on
site, including the transversal reinforcements. [NOTE: In case you did not solve question a), consider
l0=13m].
c) (40%) Define the in-plan dimension Bx of the rectangular footing considering the design value for the contact
stress Rd = 350kPa. [NOTE: In case you did not solve question b), consider MEd=600kN.m].
