Aga khan palace pune

The Aga Khan Palace was built by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III in Pune, India. The
palace was an act of charity by the spiritual leader of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims, who wanted
to help the poor in the neighboring areas of Pune, who were drastically hit by famine.

The Aga Khan Palace is a majestic building. The palace is closely linked to the Indian
freedom movement as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi,
his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. It is also the place where Kasturba Gaandi
Mahadev Desai died. In 2003, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) declared the site as a
monument of national importance.

Interior of aga khan palace

Aga Khan Palace in Pune is an elegant mansion built in 1892 by Sultan Aga Khan III. The
palace's interiors display photographs, personal objects, and possessions of Mahatma Gandhi.
It was once the site where Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, as well as Sarojini
Naidu and Mahadev Desai were held prisoners. Aga Khan Palace served as the prison for
Mahatma Gandhi in Pune from Aug 1942 to May 1944. He lived here along with his wife
Kasturba, his secretary Mahadev Desai & Sarojini Naidu. In fact, both Kasturba Gandhi and
Mahadev Desai died in the premises of this Palace turned prison. A corner of the Palace
premises serves as the Samadhi dedicated to two of them. Some of the ashes of Mahatma
Gandhi are placed next to the two samadhis. Samadhis are nothing but Tulasi plants growing
on top of the places where Kasturba and Mahadev Desai were cremated.

Honestly, when you walk around this Palace with sprawling gardens, long corridors, and
huge rooms, you wonder if you could really call it imprisonment. I assume there was no
restriction on movement within the large campus of the palace. Maybe the residents could
even step out – this was an era long before media watch came in vogue.
KASTURBA GANDHI SAMADHI

AGA KHAN PALACE

Kasturba Samadhi is located within the serene locality of Aga Khan Palace in Pune. It is
widely known as Kasturba Gandhi Memorial and is built in memory of Mahatama Gandhi's
wife Kasturba Gandhi who breathed her last in this palace.

The exquisite white marble memorial or Kasturba Samadhi is designed by the noted architect
Charles Correa. Kasturba Gandhi's ashes are kept here and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi has
been built near by the memorial.

Since the palace was used by Britishers as prison, Mahatama Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and
his secretary Mahadevbhai Desai served their sentence here for almost 2 years for starting the
Quit India Movement in 1942. Mahadev Bhai and Kasturba passed away in between and this
is why Kasturba Samadhi was built there.

Kasturba Samadhi is accompanied by a National museum in memory of Kasturba Gandhi in

the vicinity of Aga Khan Palace and houses things such as Gandhiji's writing desk, his bed,
Kasturba's clothes and her footwear.

Beside Kasturba Samdhi, the walls of the museum also known as Gandhi National Museum
which is dedicated to Kasturba Gandhi have been beautifully decorated by the snaps of Indian
freedom movement, these pictures are mesmerizing as well as unnerving for they make you
feel proud as well as make you realize the pain through which our ancestors went through.
SOME OLD NEWS PAPERS IN AGA KHAN PALACE.
The big hall at the entrance has a large
statue of his. The large paintings around,
paint them literally as an avatar. There are
old black and white pictures of him
during the freedom movement. A
particularly impactful picture is that of
him with a begging bowl in front of a
huge crowd.
