I am applying for the Master of data science at the University of East London online

program & this is my personal statement.

Dear Sir or Madam,

My admiration of data started in early childhood. I was the brilliant student in the class
– always getting all the correct answers and solving all the complicated problems.
Everyone used to tell me that I would ‘be’ something in the future, and I grew up with
an intuitive belief in myself and my own capabilities.
However, life turned out to be trickier than the most difficult math problems I faced in
school. I got into messy relationships, made the wrong choices, and had a child for whom
I am now fully responsible. These circumstances triggered a series of depressive and anxiety
episodes and even thoughts of suicide.
At that point in my life, I decided to call back the brilliant little girl who loved data and
math, and I decided once again to believe in her, despite all the forces telling me not to.
I started to restudy statistics and data analysis on my own, which enabled me to start
freelancing through the Upwork platform. In the last three years, I have worked on
hundreds of statistical analyses and machine learning projects in a wide variety of
disciplines. Meeting my clients’ needs has entailed a long, hard journey of self-study,
including countless hours watching tutorials, reading articles, and applying these
concepts to practice. Today, I can say that I am deeply familiar with all regression and
classification models, all statistical tests, and all major software packages, including SAS,
STATA, R, SPSS, PYTHON and Excel.
Was it really for the sake of achieving financial stability? Honestly, I don’t think so.
Rather, I think I started this journey because I owe something to my old self, to my
daughter and to all women in the world: proof that we can do it on our own. We don’t
need to accept violence or tolerate failure; we don’t have to just sit there like cowards
hiding from life.
Because every day I encounter people who believe that women can’t do something just
because they are women. I once let myself believe that, and it nearly killed me. I want
to help build a world where my daughter doesn’t have to hear these voices, to succeed
by setting an example so that other little girls can see and know that those voices are
wrong.
Now, my next step in this journey is to acquire the formal scientific education that lays
the foundation for my practice. This is important to me so that I can fully round out my
knowledge of data science and get a regular fixed position in a firm where I deal with
data as I want and also achieve the financial stability that my daughter and I need.
That is why I am applying for this program, and I hope you help me do it. I am
committed to being the best student in the class, getting the best grades, attending all
lectures, doing everything right, and always being the phoenix who built herself from
ashes.
Thank you
