ME 324 Machine Design I Project

The shaft of d diameter made of sufficiently strong steel against failure, shown in the figure, is designed
to transmit an input power of P = 12 kW with an angular speed of 900 rpm . The power input is provided
on spur gear B, with a diameter of dB = 80 mm, by the resultant force F with a pressure angle of Φ = 20o .
The shaft is supported by two identical journal bearings located at A and C. The output power is
transmitted by the resultant force R, with a pressure angle of Φ = 20o , acting on spur gear D of diameter
dD = 160 mm. Noting that the minimum required efficency for power transmission is 90 % , then using
Raimondi-Boyd plots and Trumpler condition, please choose the appropriate

(i) SAE oil (with an ambient temperature 20oC and maximum oil service temperature 80 oC)

(ii) power efficiency (acceptable time and area assumptions are decisive in cooling efforts of oil)
(iii) shaft diameter
(iv) identical journal bearings at A and C indicating L (bearing width), minimum film thickness, position of
minimum film thickness, coefficient of friction, maximum film pressure, maximum film pressure position,
terminating film position, total oil flow, oil side flow.
Hint : You are highly encouraged to employ MATLAB or a similar computational tool.
