FINAL WELL REPORT
KAR COMPANY DRILLING NEW WELLS
KHURMALA DOME FIELD WELL NO: KDN-16 (K-442)
FIELD DIVISION WELL LOCATION (SX)

1. Introduction
Khurmala Dome (qubbat Khurmala) is one of three domes making up the super-giant oil-bearing
“Kirkuk” field (haql Kirkuk) in northern Iraq. The field has a clear surface expression, manifested by
a sinuous anticline about 105 km long and 3-5 km wide. The two main domes, Baba and Avanah are
located near Kirkuk, while the Khurmala dome is located near Erbil.
The Khurmala field is the northernmost of the three domes, although a fourth, smaller dome is present
further north: Zab dome, this is now confirmed by the recent (November 2013) discovery made by
Oryx Petroleum, Operator of the Hawler license area to the NE of Khurmala. The two main domes
(Baba and Avanah) are located in Kirkuk, while the third one (Khurmala) is located in Erbil. It has
been decided that Erbil will take the lead in managing and developing the Khurmala Dome. For that
purpose, Kar Group working with MNR, has been asked to operate and maintain the field.
The Khurmala Dome is located about 80 km to the north west of Kirkuk and 35 km west of Erbil, lies
fully on the territory of Erbil Governorate. The Khurmala Dome is about 22 km long and 3 km wide.
Hydrocarbons are produced from the Tertiary (main limestone) reservoir, a fold hydrocarbon trap
(Anticline fold) and rock type is Dolomitic limestone with reasonably good porosity and permeability,
which is characterized by natural fractures. The oil column thickness is thought to be about 60 m
sandwiched between a large gas cap and aquifer. The estimated Gas-Oil Contact is located at a depth
of 593 m MSL and Oil-Water Contact at a depth between 700 and 650 m MSL depending on location.

2. Geology Information Part

2.1. The Field Structure
In 2012-13 a new 3D seismic survey of the field was completed and a static / dynamic model had have
been build.
Khurmala consists of asymmetrical anticline, the dip of strata on both side is not equals, the dip limbs
of south west is more than the dip of north east, and the direction of dip of plunge and dip angle in
Khurmala differ than Baba and Avanah dome (in opposite direction).
Khurmala field lay in northwestern part from Kirkuk field consist of third dome for this field, and
separated from Avanah field Debbaga Saddle. The long of the dome about, (20-22) km. and wide about
(3.5) km. this dome contains a large quantity of free – gas, so contain oil column thickness about (104)
m. till (1994) drilled (39) wells, after drilled (24) wells ……. etc. density of oil equals (34.5) degrees.
Now but plans of developed the field by (KRG). Tertiary age formations are the main reservoirs for
oil production from Khurmala Dome and located at depth ranged between (420 – 720) meter below
mean sea level, mainly consisted from limestone beds and for this study divided into four reservoir
units.

2.3. Stratigraphy

2.3.1. Stratigraphy of Tertiary

The rocks exposed in the area have been subdivided into the Fars and Bakhtyari series (in NE flanks,
N Plunge near well k - 295), which are more or less lithological units, have their greatest influence in
evolution of the present-day topography. Generally, their exposures are confined to time anticline
belts. Whereas in the synclines alluvium and other recent deposits cover the most of the sequence. The
Stratigraphy sequences of the drilled wells encountered from the youngest to the oldest as described
below:

1. Upper/ Middle Fars formation: - (U. Miocene) (0 -632) m. Estimated true thickness: 632m.

The formation is predominantly of clastic one, it consists of an alternating series of Sandstone, reddish
brown, partly grey, fine to medium grains, inter bedded with Claystone, reddish to red brown, light
grey soft, slightly hard argillaceous, calcareous, semi plastic, show gradation into Marley to blue soft
plastic Calcareous and Argillaceous with Anhydrite nodules, increase towards the base of the
sequence. It found near tops of formation deposited of fresh water limestone white to buff in this well
not recovered due to taken of Samples intervals.

2. Lower Fars formation: - (M. Miocene). (632- 902) m. Estimated true thickness: 270 m.

The formation consists of alternation of Gypsum, Anhydrite, lagoonal Limestone markers, Marls, and
Siltstone with occasional rocks Salts. The top of the formation is marked by massive Anhydrite known
as (A0). The thickness of the formation in Khurmala dome

LF - is subdivided in to a number of units:

A - Upper Red Beds: - (632 -682) m.

Estimated true thickness: 50m.

The unit consists of an alternating sequence of reddish – brown, fine Sandstone, red siltstone, molted
blue Marls, sporadic with thin bands of Limestone markers and Anhydrite.

FIELD DIVISION WELL LOCATION (SX)

B - Seepage Beds :-( 682 -746) m.

Estimated true thickness: 64 m.

This unit consists of thick bands of white crystalline Anhydrites, inter bedded with bands of reddish
or blue Marls & Siltstone with thin bands of limestone (B1 – B4).

C - Saliferous Beds: (746 – 858) m. Estimated true thickness: 112m.

This unit is variable in thickness due to salt tectonic. It consists of alternations of Anhydrite, Gypsum,
Halite, Marl, and rare band of limestone(S-1) marker, which is very useful marker, this marker was
recognized in k -442, KDN-16.

D -Transition Beds :-( 858 – 902) m. Estimated true thickness: 44m.

This unit consists of a succession of thick beds of Anhydrite with some Gypsum inter bedded with thin
bands of Limestone and Marls, in this sequence several marker horizons have been established over
Kirkuk field, namely (T1 - T5) Limestone.
3. Basal Fars Conglomerate: - (M. Miocene), (902 - 906) m, estimated true thickness is 5 m.
This is conglomeratic limestone which is on the whole white and having indications of gas and oils
staining. The section is full of miliolids, dendritina sp. and reworked nummulitesspp. The base
represented surface of Unconformity
4. Avanah Dense FM: - (Upper/Middle Eocene), (906–982) m,
Estimated true thickness is 76 m.
This is fairly variable formation, having predominately a recrystallized fore – reef type lithology but
with some marly. The rock is porous, vuggy, fractured and locally stylolitic. Fauna includes
nummulites spp. Discocyclina sp., miliolids, textularids, alveeolina spp. Orbitolites sp., shell
fragments, echinoid debris, and algae. The rock is frequently pyritic and contains abundant calcite
growths.
5. Avanah Porous FM: - (Upper/Middle Eocene), (982 - 1037) m,
Estimated true thickness is 55m.
The well entered the gas cap of the (Main limestone) pay on this dome (khurmala), passed through the
oil column and into the water zone.

6. Khurmala (E4a) FM: - (Lower Eocene), (954 - 1120) m,

Estimated true thickness is 175 m.
The top of this formation is placed at the incoming of a silty, marly limestone. It is mad up essentially
of silty limestone which grade locally into calcareous sandstone; with thin shale developments on the
whole the rock is dolomitic, with all gradations of recrystallisation. The section is predominantly
dense, but with local porous section. Pyrites is common .Some traces of gastropods and foraminifera
can be made out, including miliolids, textularids and valvulinids.
7. Khurmala (E4b) FM: - (Lower Eocene), (1037 - 1071) m, estimated true thickness is 34 m.
The top of this formation is placed at the incoming of a silty, marly limestone. It is mad up essentially

3. Drilling Information
3.1. Drilling Operation Summary:
3.1.1. First hole 17 1/2" hole interval (000-410m RTKB)

The hole was drilled from 12m to 410 m (RTKB) with 17 ½" bit to the middle Fars formation using
FWB mud density (1.02g/cc.-1.10 g/cc.) with problem of tight hole while new connection and tripping.
After reaming and conditioning mud 13 3/8" casing was run to the depth 407 m, and cemented to the
surface with one slurry successfully, by using bottom and top plugs and pumping 273 bbl class G
cement slurry with density 1.8 gm/cc, WOC and working on the well head (cutting & levelling of 13
3/8” casing) Installed 13 5/8" -5000 psi casing head housing thread type (BTC) Installed BOPs and
pressure tested with 2000 psi.

3.1.2. Second hole 12 1/4" hole interval (410-887 m RTKB)

The hole was drilled from 410 m to 887 m (RTKB) with 17 ½" bit to the top of Avanah formation
using S.S.M. mud density (1.15 g/cc - 1.25 g/cc) with problems of tight holes in intervals between
477m-630m and 825m-847m then treated by reaming and circulation, also observed pipe stuck at 830m
and released successfully by jarring downward. After conditioning mud & open hole logging, 9 5/8"
casing was run to the depth 884.7 m and cemented to the surface with one slurry successfully, by using
211 bbl. Class G cement slurry with density (1.7g/cc) WOC and working on the well head then cut off
and levelling 9 5/8" casing.
Installed & connected 13 5/8"-5000 psi. Casing head spool on the casing head housing.
Installed DSA 5000x10000psi then BOPs and tested pipe ram, kill line vale and annular preventer with
2500 psi for 15 minutes successfully, also pressure tested blind rams with 2500 psi for 15 minutes
successfully. After drill out plugs and cement to three meters above 9 5/8" casing shoe then scraped
casing and performed Logging (CBL and VDL), the 9 5/8" casing integrity test done with 1000 psi for
20 minutes successfully.

3.1.3. Third hole 8 1/2" hole interval (887-1089 m RTKB)

The hole was drilled from 887m to 1089m (RTKB) at (Khurmala E4a) formations with 81/2" bit using
KCL Polymer mud density (1.02g/cc.-1.04g/cc.) with problem of partial to complete mud losses while
drilling operation at depth 924m observed total loss tried to control loss with LCM not succeeded then
continued blind drilling from 924m to 962m with water, while drilling at 962m indicated low rate of
penetration and suddenly string weight dropped, POOH BHA was parted from DC and about 40m
BHA left in hole, tried many times with fishing tools (overshot +spiral grapple) to catch and take out
the fish but it was not succeed, performed kick off cement from bottom to 887m then started side track

drilling with MWD tools. While side track drilling at depth 941 observed total loss tried with LCM
not succeed continued blind drilling to 1089m TD, after clean and circulate the hole performed wire
line logging then run in hole OEDP and performed three diesel bentonite plugs and two thixotropic
cement plugs to control the loss not succeed, finally 7’’ casing was run to 1085.5m
7’’ casing cemented with two slurries (lead and tail) using 64bbl of 1.8 g/cc with loss materials as lead
and 86bbl of 1.8 g/cc as tail. WOC, cut and levelled 7’’ casing then installed 11’’ 5000psi tubing head
spool on 13 5/8’’ 5000 psi casing head spool. Installed 13 5/8’’ BOPs and pressure tested with 2500
psi successfully, After RIH 6’’ bit and drilled out plugs performed scraping and wireline logging then
RIH final well completion and set the packer with 3500psi.

3.2. Hole Problems and their remedies:

3.2.1. First hole 17 1/2" (000 m-410 m RTKB)
Tight hole while tripping and new connection treated by reaming and mud conditioning.

3.2.2. Second hole 12 1/4" hole interval (410-887m RTKB)

Observed tight hole (10-15 Ton) before new connections while drilling & tripping @ the interval
(477m-590m)(590m-630m)(762m-790m)(825m-847m) The tight hole was treated by continue
reaming pre any new connection & conditioning mud while reaming and before tripping.

3.2.3. Third hole 8 1/2" hole interval (887-1089m RTKB)

- Partial mud loss while drilling at 924m, loss treated by LCM.
- Total mud loss while drilling at 926m tried to control the loss with LCM not succeeded,
continue drilling blindly.
- While drilling blindly from 926m-962m at 962m observed low ROP and String weight
suddenly dropped. POOH to check the BHA condition, observed BHA parted from box side of
DC, fish left in hole (Bit+ Bit sub+2DC+STB+DC+STB+DC) observed top of fish at 917m.
Tried several times to catch and take out the fish by fishing tools (5342 overshot+ spiral
grappler+ magnet) Fishing operation failed. Performed kick off cement plug from bottom hole
962m up to 887m then side-track drilling with MWD tools from 880 to 1089m TD.
- After completed drilling operation and reached TD at 1089m, observed mud still losing totally
in to the formation. Tried to control loss with acid soluble LCM (Not succeed) then Performed
three Gunk plugs (diesel+ Bentonite) and two Thixotropic cement plugs to seal off the lost
zone (Not succeed).
- While trying to control total loss observed the well started to flow (kick occurred) it was
controlled by Closing the BOP (SICP=940 psi, SIDPP =920psi) and pumping water through
drill pipe and annulus, pressure decreased from both side to zero psi.

4.4. Open Hole Logging Results and Discussion

Formation evaluation was carried out in two sections (12.25" & 8.5").
Lithology and porosity computation have been done using Density, Neutron, Compressional slowness
(Sonic log) and Gamma ray logs.
Saturation computations have been done using conventional evaluation with three different salinities
(30, 50, & 82) kppm for Tertiary and Cretaceous reservoir. Moreover, it was calculated via Archie’s
equation and the following factors were used in the equation:-
 Cementation factor M=2.
 Saturation exponent N=2.
 Formation resistivity factor (Tortuosity) factor A=1.
Gas presence in the formation where identified from density-neutron measurement.

4.4.1. 1st Section 12 1/4" Open hole (Lower Fars):-

Wireline logging operation was carried out in this section to get lithology and hole & annular volumes
for cementing operation after running casing.

4.4.2. 2nd Section 8.5" Open hole (Tertiary Reservoir):-

This survey has covered the main limestone formation (884 – 1085) mRTKB. Starting with Avanah
Dense Formation which is mainly composed of limestone and average porosity is 0.1 and average
saturation 0.46. Avanah Porous which is mainly composed of limestone and dolomite with average
porosity 0.22 and average saturation 0.18. Khurmala A formation composed of Massive dolomite and
average porosity is 0.28 and average saturation 0.27 also contains Vugs and Fractures.
The maximum deviation in this section is 8.2 degree at 963 m RTKB.

6.1. Duties and Activities:
During Drilling operation at Well Location K-442/KDN-16 (SX), we were following all safety rules
and KAR Policy, we tried to build safety culture and share our knowledge with each other. We as KAR
Company HSE Engineers did the following points at the well site before starting the operation:
 Safety meeting before starting job (giving safety instructions and advised the crew about the
hazards they might face), and secured communication between KAR and Service companies.
 Preparing all safety equipment before starting job.
 Plan for evacuating in case of fire, Gas kick or any accident.
 Keep monitoring the operations, and make sure they are done according to safety standards.

6.2. HSE equipment at well location:

6.4. Hygiene and environmental health:

Every day checking on personal and location hygiene, offices, bed rooms, and restaurant, we always
inducted the crew to keep the location clean, and throw garbage in the trash bins, every day a truck
came to collect trashes.
Spilled dangerous and slippery materials such as oil, diesel, and chemicals, were instructed to be
cleaned immediately, as it is dangerous and may cause accident and injuries.
Toilets were not in good situations.

6.5. Confined spaces:

Dealing with confined spaces, such as cleaning or welding tanks, is one of the jobs that requires
permission before starting, as it is dangerous and may contain toxic gases, or lacks for oxygen, we
always checked before letting anyone start the job, using multi-gas detector, to make sure there is toxic
gases, and there is enough oxygen percentage.

driver license, forklift and crane inspection, and lifting cables check, keep monitoring the
lifting job, and prevent anyone from standing under or above the lifted weight, to prevent injury
incase weight falling.
 High pressure test: safety meeting before test pressure test job, explaining to crew the hazards
of the jobs, and instruct them not to go near the high pressure area, barricading the area to
prevent anyone from entering the area, and check pressure pipes and make sure it had protection
line between every joint.
 Perforation job: safety meeting before job to explain the hazards of job, instruct them turn off
any electronic device, that uses radio signals, as it may trigger the explosives used during job,
also barricading the area to prevent anyone from going near the place.

6.7. Hazardous incidents:

 There was accident one of the GYP' Crew was bitten by dog, and immediately
took the person to the hospital.
6.8. Safety drills and inductions:
 H2S induction was given to all KAR and GYP staffs, by GYP' H2S engineer, explaining to
them H2S properties and hazards, and how to act and use the breathing apparatus, in case the
gas released.
