I. TO CONFIRM INFORMATION – TAG QUESTIONS

TAG QUESTIONS WITH “BE”


We usually use Tag Questions when we want to confirm information.

AFFIRMATIVE FORM NEGATIVE FORM

Affirmative statement, BE + NOT +


Negative statement, BE + SUBJECT + ?
SUBJECT + ?

EXAMPLES (simple present, past and future)

You´re not kidding, are you? That´s a flying saucer, isn´t it?

She wasn´t here yesterday, was she? They were coming with us, weren´t they?

TAG QUESTIONS WITH THE AUXILIARY “DO”


We use Tag Questions when we need to confirm information.

AFFIRMATIVE FORM NEGATIVE FORM

Affirmative statement, DO+ NOT +


Negative statement, DO + SUBJECT + ?
SUBJECT + ?

EXAMPLES (simple present, past)

You don´t work at MAP, do you? She knows a lot about this, doesn´t she?

They didn´t come yesterday, did they? It rained all night, didn´t it?

TAG QUESTIONS WITH “WILL”


We use Tag Questions when we need to confirm information.

AFFIRMATIVE FORM NEGATIVE FORM

Negative statement, WILL + SUBJECT + ? Affirmative statement, WON´T + SUBJECT + ?

EXAMPLES

They won´t be there tomorrow ,will


He´ll be at work today, won´t he?

TAG QUESTIONS WITH “HAVE”


We usually use Tag Questions when we want to confirm information.

AFFIRMATIVE FORM NEGATIVE FORM

Negative statement, + HAVE + SUBJECT Affirmative statement, HAVEN´T +


PRONOUN + ? SUBJECT PRONOUN + ?

EXAMPLES (present perfect and past perfect)

You haven´t arrive yet, have they? It has rained a lot lately, hasn´t it?

You had never been here, had you? We had seen that before, hadn´t we?

II. GRAMMAR ABOUT TAG QUESTIONS

Tag questions depend on their previous clause, if the first clause is affirmative, then
the tag question will be negative and viceversa. These clauses are always separated
by coma (,).
Watch out for the following tag question:
I am coming next, aren´t I?
Las Tag questions dependen de su cláusula anterior, si la primera cláusula es afirmativa,
entonces la tag question será negativa y viceversa. Estas cláusulas siempre están
separadas por coma (,).

1. We often use tag questions to:


a. Check, confirm information we believe to be true.
For example:
César lives in Uruguay, doesn´t he?
Note: The speaker believes that César lives in Uruguay and wants to
check this information. (El ponente o quien habla, cree que César vive en
Uruguay y quiere comprobar esta información.)
or
b. Comment on a situation, to encourage a person to make small talk
(trivial talk). (Comentar una situación, para animar a una persona a tener
una pequeña charla.)
For example:
It´s a nice day, ins´t it?
Note: The speaker is commenting on the weather. (El orador o quien
habla está comentando sobre el clima.)

2. Tag questions have a statement and a tag


For example:
You´re not from Argentina, are you?

Explanation:
Form of the Tag questions varies, but their meaning is always similar. The
statement expresses an assumtion. The tag means right? (La forma de las Tag
questions varía, pero su significado siempre es similar. La declaración expresa una
suposición. El Tag significa ¿verdad?)
Observe the following facts about Tag Questions:
1. If the statement verb is affirmative, the Tag verb is negative.
For example:
You work on fridays, don´t you?
affirmative negative

2. If the the statement verb is negative, The Tag verb is affirmative.


For example:
You don´t work on fridays, do you?
negative affirmative

3. The Tag always uses a form of be or an auxiliary verb: be, have, do, will or a modal
such as can, could or should.
For example:

It´s a nice day, ins´t it?


(be)
Your mother´s name is Clara, isn´t it?
You´ve lived here a long time, haven´t you? (have)
You come from New York, don´t you? (do)
You can drive, can´t you? (can)

I AM
I am: The negative question tag “am I not
has no contraction. The grammatical In others words:
contraction correct for questions tags is: “ The tag for I am is aren´t I. Not( amn´t I).

For example:
I am: La forma negativa de la Tag question
“am I not”, no tiene contracción. La I am next, aren´t I?

Tag questions es: “aren´t I?”

For example:
I am still the leader of the group, aren´t I?
I am going out, aren´t I?

THIS/THAT
When the subject of the statement is this or that, the subject of the Tag is it.
That´s a good idea, isn´t it? CORRECT
Not That´s a good idea, isn´t that? INCORRECT
PRONOUNS
In Tag the pronouns must replace the subjects. (En Tag los pronombres deben sustituir a
los sujetos.)
Domingo works here, doesn´t he? CORRECT
Not Domingo works here, doesn´t Domingo? INCORRECT
