Qn1.

You are provided with the following

FA1 which is hydrochloric acid

FA2 which is sodium hydroxide solution

Solid R which is anhydrous sodium carbonate

You required to;

I) Prepare a standard solution of sodium carbonate and use it to Standardize FA1

II) Use the standardized FA1 to determine the the concentration of sodium hydroxide n FA2 in
g/dm3

PROCEDURE

a)Weigh accurately 1.8g of R and dissolve in about 100cm3 of water. Transfer the solution into a
250cm3 volumetric flask and make it up to he mark with distilled water. Lable the resultant solution
FA3

b) Pipette 25 or (20cm3) of FA3 into a conical flask and titrate it with FA1 using methyl orange
indicator. Repeat the titration and record your results in the table below

RESULTS

Mass of R + mass of the bottle

Mass of bottle alone

Mass of Y

Qn2.

You are provided with substance Y which contains two cations and two anions. You are required to
carry out the following tests on W and identify the anions and cation in it. Record your observations
and deductions in the table below.

TESTS OBERVATIONS DEDUCTIONS

a)To a spatula endfull of Y carefully
add 3 drops of sulphuric acid and
warm

b) Heat a spatula endful of Y in a

dry test tube until there is no
further change.

C)To two spatula endfuls of Y

add dilute nitric acid until there is
no further change

Add sodium hydroxide solution

dropwise until in excess

Filter and keep both the filtrate

and residue

d)To the filtrate add dilute nitric

acid until the solution is just acidic
and divide the resultant solution
into four parts
i) To the first part add 2-3 drops of
sodium hydroxide solution
dropwise until in excess

ii) To the second part, add aqueous

ammonia solution dropwise until
in excess

iii)To the third part add dilute

sulphuric acid

iv)To the fourth part carryout test

of your choice to confirm one of the
cation n Y

e)To two spatula endfuls of Y add

about 5cm3 of water, shake very
well and filter Divide the
filtrate into five parts

I)To the first part add dilute sodium

hydroxide solution dropwise until in
excess
ii)To the second part add aqueous
ammonia solution dropwise until in
excess

Use the third part of the filtrate

to carry out the test of your
choice to confirm one of the
cation n Y

iii)To the fourth part add 3-4 drops

of Lead (II) nitrate solution

Use the firth part to carry out the

test of your choice to confirm one
of the anion inY
