SUCCESS CRITERIA 1. Pupils can write an informal email in about 140-190 words.

ACTIVITIES
1. Pupils revise as a class the typical features of informal emails (e.g. no address at the beginning,
informal greeting (‘Hi’) or no greeting, informal language like ‘can you’, use of contractions,

2. A list is written on the board so pupils may refer to it later.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT 3. Pupils turn to English Download page 15 and read the instructions.
4. Pupils review linking words by brainstorming a list, with a list written on the board so pupils may refer
to it later.
5. Pupils identify 5 linking words/phrases in paragraphs 2 and 3.
6. Pupils compare answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
7. Pupils proceed to Activity 6 and look at the 6 linking words and label them a either (F) for Formal or
(I) for Informal.
8. Pupils compare answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
9. Pupils read the writing task in Activity 7.
10. Pupils answer the following questions orally and as a class:
 Who has sent you the email?
 What does he have to do?
 Why are you replying?
 What is the main thing you have to write about?
 What points do you have to include?
11. Pupils read and review phrases in the Language Bank as a class.
12. Pupils create a rough draft similar to what they have done in the previous lesson before they attempt
to write an email.
13. Pupils write an email of about 140-190 words using informal register, phrases from the Language
Bank and linking words.(Main Skill and Complementary Skill)
Differentiated Actvities:
Less proficient pupils: Write only three paragraphs for the writing activity.
More proficient pupils: Write a more detailed account of their family routine and how they spend their
leisure time together (200-250 words)
14. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by completing an exit card: ‘what went well in your writing?’
POST-LESSON and ‘your writing would have been even better if…’
15. A few pupils share their cards with the class.
