materials are removed from the body. Excretion is an example of
catabolic metabolism.
Excretory products Excretory organs Remarks
Carbondioxide Lungs Gas in expired air
Nitrogenous waste Kidneys Constituents of urine
products
 Mainly urea skin Constituents of sweat, only
 Creatinine in small quantities
 Uric acid
Excess water Kidney Main constituent of urine
Skin Main constituent of sweat
lungs Water vapour in expired air
Bile pigments liver Via the intestine
The organs of the excretory system
Organs of Excretion
• Kidney – main organ of excretion
• Lungs – removal of CO2 from blood.
• Liver – breaks down excessive amino
acids, and detoxifies many substances like,
bacterial wastes, alcohol, drugs, etc…
• The Skin - Removes excess salts through
sweat glands and excess heat through the
water that accompanies the salt.
The kidney
The functions of kidney
 Excretes urea, uric acid and creatinine
in the form of urine.

 Filters and reabsorbs mineral salts and

nitrogenous wastes from our body.

 The kidneys control the fluid volume in

our body (Homeostasis).
Urinary system (Parts and functions)
 Kidneys: Kidneys are our main
excretory organs- they are towards the
back of our body just above our waist.
They remove urea and other wastes
from blood and excrete it in a liquid
called urine.
 Renal vein: It carries clean (urea free)
blood away from the kidneys.
 Renal artery: It carries dirty (urea
rich) blood away to the kidneys.
 Ureter: They are tubes which carry
urine to the bladder.
 Urinary bladder: It is a bag which
stores urine until we go to the toilet.
 Sphincter: It is a ring of muscle which
keeps the bladder closed until we go
to toilet.
 Urethra: It is the tube which carries
urine out of your body.
